LLRS Quarterly Newsletter Winter 2023

Update from the LLRS President - Dr. Nichols

I’m already looking forward to July seeing mountains and water in the same view at the July annual meeting in Lake Tahoe.  We are planning a meeting that will focus on you as the learner, scientist, and life changer. I have invited speakers that will push our limits. Ryan "Birdman" Parrot is sure to inspire us. He is currently conducting the Human Performance Project (www.americanextreme.com). Even if you are a surgeon who would rather read then hike, I believe he'll help us all aspire to achieve our greatest potential. This is why we ask of our patients, right? There will be something for everyone at this meeting including some time to take a breath in the beautiful surroundings.

I wanted to say how excited I was to witness the success of the inaugural ELER course. We taught residents and fellows the basics of deformity planning. They built frames, explored virtual reality surgery, and had some friendly competition. This has been a dream of mine, and many others, to create this basic deformity course. A huge thank you to Phil McClure, David Podeszwa, Karen Syzdek, Madeline Bacon, and the entire faculty!

I am excited for the upgrade to our website, which should be coming soon. Every LLRS member can have his or her own profile page, pay dues and register for meetings online, and you will be able to see the meetings you are registered for in your profile. Please log on to the website to stay in touch with LLRS!

So much more is happening, as you will learn in this new newsletter format. Please follow us on social media. Hope to see you in Vegas and again in Tahoe!

LLRS - IDEA Grant Recipients

The LLRS was recently awarded an IDEA (inspire diversity, equity, and access) grant from the AAOS. This funding will help support our competitive travelling fellowship. The LLRS is grateful to the AAOS for this generous funding opportunity and look forward to inspiring future limb deformity surgeons with these funds. Learn more about our travelling fellowship.

Education Committee Updates

Dr. David Podeszwa

The first annual Essentials of Lower Extremity Reconstruction (ELER) hands-on course for residents and fellows was held January 20-21, 2023 in Dallas. Co-directed by the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society and the Baltimore Limb Deformity Course, ELER is a 2-day course dedicated to introducing the basics of deformity analysis and the use of circular external fixation. More than 30 attendees and a dozen faculty from throughout the United States and Canada participated in this unique educational opportunity that combines didactic and multiple hands-on sessions. All involved offered extremely positive feedback. The goal is to make ELER the “AO Course” of deformity analysis and external fixation. We are looking forward to ELER 2024 which will be held January 26-27 in Dallas. Additional information will be posted on the LLRS website soon.

BOS/AAOS Updates

Dr. Mani Kahn

For the past year I have had the distinct honor to serve as the LLRS representative to the AAOS Board of Specialties (BOS), along with our former president, Raymond Liu. This body is an opportunity for the specialty societies to interface directly with academy leadership.

There have been numerous opportunities to glean insights that benefit our society with respect to the research grant matching process, leadership development, diversity and inclusion, research collaboration, advocacy and the clinical practice guideline process. Dr. Liu, Dr. Nichols and myself attended the Academy’s fall leadership conference and had the opportunity to meet with our nation’s leaders to discuss issues pertinent to our specialty.

Dr. Nichols, our current president, succeeded in having an advisory opinion passed on ageism. Dr. Liu presented our society update which highlighted both our diverse membership and our international efforts. He highlighted our global health collaboration, and our work in deformity correction program building in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

Lastly, building on the efforts of our predecessors Dr. Jill Flanagan and Dr. Austin Fragomen, we have succeeded in bringing our societies needs to the AAOS. As such, starting in 2024, limb deformity will have its own category at the AAOS annual meeting. This will enable us to be more involved in program development and best organize our offerings. We hope this motivates our membership to submit research and work together to enhance the limb deformity educational offerings.
