BOS/AAOS Updates
Dr. Mani Kahn
For the past year I have had the distinct honor to serve as the LLRS representative to the AAOS Board of Specialties (BOS), along with our former president, Raymond Liu. This body is an opportunity for the specialty societies to interface directly with academy leadership.
There have been numerous opportunities to glean insights that benefit our society with respect to the research grant matching process, leadership development, diversity and inclusion, research collaboration, advocacy and the clinical practice guideline process. Dr. Liu, Dr. Nichols and myself attended the Academy’s fall leadership conference and had the opportunity to meet with our nation’s leaders to discuss issues pertinent to our specialty.
Dr. Nichols, our current president, succeeded in having an advisory opinion passed on ageism. Dr. Liu presented our society update which highlighted both our diverse membership and our international efforts. He highlighted our global health collaboration, and our work in deformity correction program building in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
Lastly, building on the efforts of our predecessors Dr. Jill Flanagan and Dr. Austin Fragomen, we have succeeded in bringing our societies needs to the AAOS. As such, starting in 2024, limb deformity will have its own category at the AAOS annual meeting. This will enable us to be more involved in program development and best organize our offerings. We hope this motivates our membership to submit research and work together to enhance the limb deformity educational offerings.
