Litchfield Land Trust collaborated with The Nature Conservancy to complete two strategic land acquisitions at the close of 2024

The former Buell property was acquired and merged with the Evans and Brooks fee properties to create a 127.5 acre preserve south of Brooks road in northern Litchfield. The West Branch of the Bantam River flows southeast through a pristine Hemlock ravine and river cut gorge with bedrock exposed cliff faces. The property is part of an identified strategic core forest region that stretches two miles south from the Litchfield-Goshen town line. This forested region protects critical habitats, a substantial wildlife corridor, the West Bantam River riparian zone, and the greater watershed area.

A 2.8-acre parcel surrounded on three sides by the Prospect Mountain was added to the Preserve. Volunteers remediated the property with the removal of an abandoned truck and three dumpsters filled with refuse. Volunteers, Peter Litwin and Jonathan Zwick (shown in photo) were invaluable with their efforts and the use of heavy equipment needed for the clean-up.

Lace up your boots and hit the trails!

It is cold out there, but winter is a wonderful time to explore in nature. We recommend bundling up in some warm clothing, finding a friend to walk with, and getting out on the trails. It’s proven mental and physical therapy! See photo of Bantam River from the Medicine Rock Trail in the Upper Bantam River Preserve.
