Battling Back Invasive Plants

Litchfield Land Trust is collaborating with Litchfield Community Greenway and Litchfield Public Works for the treatment and removal of invasive plants on the west side of the Station and the Greenway terminal section. Native plantings are targeted to fill in the removal of Japanese Knotweed, Multiflora Rose, Mugwort, Japanese Honeysuckle and other invasive plants.

Volunteer with Us!

Protecting the conservation values of over 4,000 acres is a big task. Litchfield Land Trust is fortunate to have a dedicated core group of trusted volunteers that consistently show up when there is hard work to be done. Thankfully, volunteer efforts coupled with our adoption of new technologies for monitoring properties, have made us exceptionally effective and efficient.

This work party was organized around the anticipated availability of two college interns that were contracted to help us. Unfortunately, the interns had health problems that prevented them from joining us. We could not help but notice that our work crew was a little on the “seasoned” side. The average age of our eight volunteers was 66 years.

With the assistance of Herb Schettler and his tractor, the group was able to regrade the Community Garden driveway, remove invasive plants, stain the port-o-let enclosure, trim and spread wood chips on the Marsh Hawk Trail, and trim the grass, invasive plants, and trees that were crowding 40 white oak saplings planted last fall along the trail. The organizer did take some ribbing for selecting such a hot and humid day.

But in the end, as is always the case, we enjoyed our time together, we were proud of our collective accomplishments, and the post work cold refreshments and banter were delightful!

Pollinator Talk at Oxford Greens

John Markelon, President of the Litchfield Land Trust presented information about Pollinator Plantings to the Oxford Greens community. The coordinator, Debby Kreitner is a member of their Garden Club and Landscape committee. Debby said how important John’s pollinator information is to these communities because they have great possibilities creating areas for pollinators. Over 50 people attended the presentation.

John said that these workshops ”empower private landowners to view their land not as a commodity to groom with a lawnmower, but as a habitat that we share with other creatures – insects, birds, mammals, etc. Lawns are a dynamic food chain that becomes a welcome space for these creatures. This engages our membership to extend our conservation mission to their yards where our community becomes an interconnected habitat. Removing invasives is one important part of this ecological restoration.”

Land preservation group representatives from the state of CT met to study forest stressors and strategies.
