President's Message

Buen Camino is the Spanish greeting expressed with a smile between fellow hikers. It means simply, good path. The Camino is a journey of human encounters and deep connections. The Camino trail provides a way to connect more deeply with fellow, global travelers while trekking through villages and managed forests.

The goal of this year's development campaign for the Litchfield Land Trust is to build similar connections, not for the hundreds of thousands of Camino pilgrims, but modest thoroughfares between stands of core forests, pastures, and wetlands.

LLT will build these connections for families and friends to breathe fresh air under the canopy of cool forests. Equally inspiring are the more secretive connections enabling the stealth movement of local mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates through these protected forest corridors.

Fragmented landscapes rejoined by our collective conservation efforts. I continue to be

inspired by the good work of our community of conservation-minded folks, like you, and the focused efforts of the Litchfield Land Trust.

“Buen Camino” … forward together!

Save the Hemlocks!

Eastern Hemlock stands have been devastated from the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). Litchfield Land Trust is collaborating with Tree Savers TREE SAVERS - Home (treesaverspa.com) and The CT Agricultural Experiment Station to battle the spread of this pest and to protect the critical shade and moisture loving hemlock trees. Tree Savers provided 16 colonies of a small black beetle, S. tsugae, which has been established as an effective biological control for the Woolly Adelgid. We released the beetles in 16 locations over four preserves with severely impacted hemlock trees. The locations have been tagged and mapped and the effectiveness of the treatments will be monitored. See the link below for more information on the regional effort.

News from the Station

A big thank you to Peter Litwin and Scott Anderson for crafting a new oak table for the conference room at the station.

Laura and Steven Crowley donated a magnificent 15’ White Oak tree to LLT in memory of Andrew Crowley Derwin. The tree is planted on the south end of the Station parking area.
