The Shortest Month


February is the shortest month of the year with only 28 days, except in leap years when it has 29 days. Leap years occur every four years to help synchronize the calendar year with the solar year.


Black History Month


February is Black History Month, a time to honor the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history. This month, we celebrate influential figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman.


Groundhog Day


Date: February 2nd


On Groundhog Day, if a groundhog spots its shadow, it signifies six more weeks of winter. If not, an early spring is on the way. The most renowned groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, has been forecasting the weather since 1887.


Valentine's Day


Date: February 14th


Valentine's Day is celebrated worldwide as a day of love and friendship. The tradition of sending Valentine's cards dates back to the 18th century.


Presidents' Day


Date: February 17, 2025


Presidents' Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February. Presidents' Day was established in 1885 to honor George Washington's birthday which now celebrates all U.S. Presidents.

Birthstone: Amethyst


The amethyst is a purple quartz that symbolizes peace, courage, and stability.


Flowers


Flowers: Violet and Primrose


Violets represent loyalty and faithfulness, while primroses symbolize young love and new beginnings.

Aquarius: January 20-February 18


Aquarians are known for being independent, innovative, and humanitarian.


Pisces: February 19-March 20


Pisces are known for being compassionate, artistic, and intuitive.


Historical Events


On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft.


On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia tragically broke apart upon re-entry, resulting in the loss of all seven crew members.


Unique Facts


No Full Moon: February is the only month that might not have a full moon, a rare event that occurs roughly once every 19 years.


Leap Year Birthdays: Did you know that the odds of being born on February 29th, a leap day, are about 1 in 1,461? People born on this day are sometimes called "Leapings" or "Leapers."

Learner Engagement News

Goddard Space Flight Center--NASA's premier space flight center, hosts the nation's largest team of scientists, engineers, and technologists dedicated to developing spacecraft, instruments, and new technologies for studying Earth, the Sun, our solar system, and the universe. LLVS Online Learners recently had the chance to attend a presentation from NASA, providing an overview of their current missions.

This was an online event so there is no video for this event!

LLVS Online Learners visited the PA College of Art and Design Campus for a college overview and a walking tour.

Online learners enjoyed a morning of fun, strategy, and camaraderie as they celebrated the joy of board games. Participants brought alongg their favorite board games to share, made new friends, and strengthened their connections within the online learning community.

Upcoming Events

Online learners will learn the importance of reptile care, past decisions that have influenced the future of reptiles, diversity in the reptile world, and, most importantly, how each reptile has a unique personality.


After the presentation, students will have hands-on time with each reptile and have the opportunity to ask questions.

Do you love maple syrup on your pancakes? Have you ever

wondered how the clear watery sap from a tree becomes

such a sweet treat? This program will teach you all about the

history of making maple syrup. You will learn to identify

sugar maple trees, tap them, collect the sap, and turn it

into syrup. This will be a fantastic opportunity for online learners to understand and appreciate the amazing process of making syrup, and you will likely want to eat even more maple syrup!

Unleash your creativity and join us for the Student Logo Design Challenge! This exciting event invites students to showcase their artistic talents and design skills. Students will have the opportunity to create a logo that represents their school's spirit, values, and/or community. Every student will leave with a customized logo shrinky dink and tumbler.
