PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Value of Healthcare

By: Lee Dossett, MD

As I take on the role of president of our medical society, I am honored to represent and advocate for the healthcare profession in our community. I would like to think Dr. Rahman for the excellent work for LMS in 2022. I have known Khalil for a long time, and I know he deeply cares about patients, physicians, and our community. For those who do not know me, I am a life long Lexingtonian and attended UK for both my undergraduate and medical degrees. I briefly left the state for residency but returned home in 2009 as a hospitalist at Baptist Health Lexington. I recently transitioned to the role of Chief Medical Officer at the hospital, though still plan to pick up the occasional admitting shift at the hospital. I have enjoyed the resumption of in person LMS meetings this year, and hope everyone continues to come out for the valuable discussion and networking opportunities.

KMA Launches "Ky Physicians Care"

Scope of Practice Campaign

KMA has launched a new public education campaign aimed at promoting the physician-led, team-based care model, “Kentucky Physicians Care.”

The effort is a result of a $65,000 grant KMA received from the AMA’s Scope of Practice Partnership in August. Kentucky Physicians Care includes an op-ed by KMA President Monalisa Tailor, M.D., which was published in December in the Courier-Journal, as well as a website with educational materials, paid advertising, and targeted efforts with legislators.

The campaign will also educate and highlight evidence-based reforms that can assist with the healthcare workforce shortage and access to care issues.

“This effort will educate Kentuckians on the role physicians play within the care team and the collaboration among providers that leads to the best patient outcomes. We will also continue to advocate for policy solutions that will ensure this model’s longevity, even as the health care system evolves,” said Dr. Tailor.

More information about the campaign is available at kyphysicianscare.com.

Why did you become a physician?

My “job” growing up was to get good grades in school and to practice piano. I solo-ed with orchestras, gave personal recitals, and won state competitions from an early age all the way through high school, reaching top five in the country when I graduated from high school. I was expected by the music community in Atlanta to become a concert pianist. However, my love of music was balanced with an interest in math and science. My calling was to be able to help people, to touch people’s lives, to make a difference. And so, armed already with musical accomplishments, I went to medical school to learn more and to fulfill my destiny to be a healer. One of the best parts of primary care is the connection one can have with patients because of continuity of care. Being in practice now for twenty years has afforded the ability to have relationships across generations of families, and we all know that there is more to medicine that just labs and test results. We are all called to medicine from different paths, but I believe we all share the love of helping people, and it is truly an honor to be a physician.

2022 Year End Review

By Christopher Hickey, LMS EVP/CEO

Like the rest of the country, 2022 saw LMS transition to near normal operations while the pandemic continues but at lower levels of death and infection. We started 2022 with LMS conducting our second virtual presidential transition with the state in a high level of Covid infection. Dr. James Borders handed off the LMS Presidency to Dr. Khalil Rahman to an empty boardroom, broadcasted virtually to the membership. By May, as the infection rate went down to “green” levels, LMS transitioned to in-person events at our May dinner meeting with a legislative update by Senator Ralph Alvarado, MD and concluded the year at our November dinner meeting with presenting Dr. Steven Stack, our Kentucky Commissioner for Health and LMS member, with the Jack Trevey Award for Community Service for his superb leadership guiding the Commonwealth through the pandemic. Thank you to Dr. Khalil Rahman for his leadership this past year as our LMS President and welcome Dr. Lee Dossett as he assumes the LMS Presidency for 2023.
