Joe Matteri
Safety Manager

Hometown:
Petaluma, California
Family:
My wife, Susan, and 4 children: Lisa, Laura, Paul and Brian.
Pets:
3 dogs: Tucker, Athena, and Emma. We also have a cat named Andy and 10 chickens we have not named. They go in the pot...I am kidding, they are pets.
Favorite Food:
Bacon and fried eggs with home fries on the weekend. When I finish eating it almost feels like it stops my heart because it is so rich. My wife is a very creative cook and never makes the same recipe twice, but it is always delicious. She looks out for our well-being by preparing healthy foods.
Guilty Pleasure:
I try to get away and hide in the garage from time to time, because if my wife sees me sitting down, we will have a problem.
Pet Peeves:
Dog hair and people who tailgate.
First Job:
I was a groundskeeper/helper at the big house.
Dislikes:
People who do not listen and having to repeat myself.
|
|
Hobbies:
Playing the guitar, scuba diving, boating, and camping. I love being outdoors.
Favorite Color:
Blue, it's just a nice, peaceful color.
Who do you most look up to?
I looked up to the farm manager on the grounds...Mr. James Corrigan, who was a great father figure and was skilled in many trades. He inspired me to pursue a career in the construction industry by teaching me how to fix anything that needed it on the grounds. Anything from welding to fixing and operating machinery...he was truly an excellent mentor along with the many other counselors.
Something everyone should know about you:
I grew up in a home for boys from 11 years old to 18 and I am 28% Native American.
Best advice you've ever received:
My football coach, Joe Ryan, said never quit, never give up, always keep striving forward, and play right along through the fourth quarter.
Best thing about your job:
I like that my job is unpredictable and challenging.

We currently have 16 LNG trucks that run the Omya contract, hauling calcium carbonate from SLC in Middlebury to Omya's plant in Florence. These trucks are all set up identically, with a main LNG tank on the driver side of the vehicle.
|
|
We have been running these trucks this way for 6 years, and we are now adding some further range to two of them. We have hired Agility to install a second tank on LNG units 7404 & 7406.
|
|
The current tank is a 206-gallon main tank on the driver side. We are now adding a 127-gallon secondary tank to the passenger side of 7404 and 7406.
This will take our range from around 400 miles to just over 600 miles on these two units. This will add more opportunity to take on work outside of the immediate area. This is a big deal because there is no other area to get LNG outside of the plant at Omya.
|
|
The new tanks will be linked to the original tank so the driver does not have to fill each side - all fueling will happen on the driver side through the same fill port they are currently using.
Also, when the extra weight is not wanted, we can shut off the second tank and only fill the original driver side tank. When it is empty, the new 127-gallon tank adds 515 pounds to the vehicle. When it is full of fuel, it will weigh about 920 pounds.
|
|
The installs are expected to be complete by this Friday, 11/6/20.

As many of you know, the Annual Rutland Halloween Parade had to be canceled this year due to COVID. The Rutland Recreation Department decided they still wanted to do something for kids, and came up with the Community Costume Stroll, held at the Rutland Rec Community Center (formerly part of the College of St. Joseph).
Casella Construction was happy to take part with an Alice in Wonderland theme, complete with an 8-foot Cheshire Cat hanging out in the 980 Loader bucket! There were 3 sessions of 100 participants each, and all candy was bagged ahead of time to make for a fun, safe, and socially distanced event!
Many thanks to all who participated and a big shout out to Nicole Webster and Jen Powers for taking the lead! Excellent work.
