LOA Receives Grant
LOA is excited to announce receiving $75,000 from the Mary Louise Home Fund, Fishwick Fund and Ann and Bill Scheer Fund of Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia. This will be used to support LOA’s Personal Care & Homemaker programs as well as providing rides through LOA’s Vital Services & Medical Transportation.
Soup for Seniors
Special thanks to our volunteers, staff, donors, and community at large for this year’s remarkable success. LOA’s Soup for Seniors was a success again this year, while we didn’t hit our goal of 45,000 pounds, we were close behind with 43,543, and distributing 114 more bags than planned, hitting 2914 total. We want to give a huge shout out to our partners at AARP Virginia and Black Dog Salvage, who respectively
donated the delivery bags, and a truck along with it over a thousand pounds of food donations. Thank you also to our satellite locations: all First Bank locations, Vistar Eye Centers in Bonsack, Franklin Road and Salem, along with Salem & Vinton Libraries; they collected 5,309 pounds of food. A huge round of applause for Security Scales for donating the scale for us to weigh all the food, St. Peter & St. Paul’s church for the use of their facility and The Roanoke County Sheriff’s Department for collecting donations and distributing several Soup bags. 
It’s more important than ever to celebrate the power and importance of Meals on Wheels amid this unprecedented time in our nation’s history. The last week of this month we’re inviting community leaders to deliver Meals on Wheels to bring awareness to the LOA Meals on Wheels program and the Older Americans Act’s 50th anniversary. We will also be using this national campaign to bring light to what it means to be an LOA Meals on Wheels volunteer in hopes of recruiting some new volunteers.

Mark your calendar for Friday, June 17,2022 for LOA’s Let’s Give Lunch. We’ll have curbside and delivery available. Meals will be $20 and that takes care of your lunch as well as providing Meals on Wheels to seniors in our area. Next month we will highlight all the information that you need to participate in this year’s event. Everything from purchasing a meal, participating in the Meals on Wheels Raffle, sponsoring, or volunteering for the event. 
This month we are continuing our segment to highlight some of LOA’s services along with the impact it has in our community and the lives of our seniors. Most people think of LOA as Meals on Wheels; however, it takes more of LOA’s wrap around services to enable seniors to remain in their homes for as long as possible.  
This month we are highlighting three of our programs that go hand in hand:  
 
  • Legal Assistance – Legal advice and assistance with the preparation of  Powers of Attorney, Advance Medical Directives, and simple wills. To  qualify a person must have income no higher than 150% of the Federal  Poverty Level.  
  • Long Term Care Ombudsman - Investigates complaints and provides advocacy for residents of any age who reside in long-term care facilities or who are receiving licensed home health care services. Responds to inquiries about long-term care services in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and licensed home health care services.  
  • Elder Justice Alliance - a community-based team of organizations and individuals committed to using education, collaboration, and coordination of community resources and services to address abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of those age 60 or older. 
LOA Center for Health & Wellness:
As you can tell from the pictures, things are moving ahead on LOA’s Center for Health & Wellness. We are busy acquiring all of the furnishings and appear to be on schedule for a late Spring completion date. The center will house a congregate diners club and Meals on Wheels site. In addition, we will sponsor Lunch and Learns and host medical providers on site with many exciting plans for future expansion. In preparation for the opening, we will be hiring a Community Health Worker to coordinate the activities for the center. Stay tuned for further updates.
