LOA Celebrates 50 years!
LOA recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary one week ago. The LOA, the Commonwealth's 2nd oldest Area Agency on Aging, was efficiently christened during the March 24th Celebration. 200 Board Members, Advisory Council Members, volunteers, staff, donors, community partners and politicians joined with us. We will be burying a time capsule later this Summer during the opening of LOA’s Health & Wellness Center. LOA is ready to roll up its sleeves and meet the challenges for the next fifty years.
Realizing that it is more important than ever to celebrate the power and importance of Meals on Wheels amid this unprecedented time in our nation’s history, this week community leaders joined in to deliver Meals on Wheels to bring awareness to the LOA Meals on Wheels program and the Older Americans Act’s 50th anniversary. LOA’s President and CEO, Ron Boyd, was able to meet with many of our community leaders this week. This national campaign also brings light to what it means to be an LOA Meals on Wheels volunteer in hopes of recruiting some new volunteers. The moment truly is just as important as the meal!
April 20th is the official date for GIVE Roanoke, our area's 24 hour day of giving. The Council of Community Services is hosting this year and LOA is participating. You can actually begin giving as early as next week. 100% of your donation goes directly to LOA for vital services.
If you have questions about your Medicare Advantage plan, need to switch plans, look at your part D prescription plan, or switch back to original Medicare, please contact us to set up an appointment.
Those who are on the cusp of turning 65 are inundated by mail, phone calls and even cold call visits trying to get them to enroll in a plan. It can become confusing and overwhelming for anyone. The LOA has trained staff and volunteers ready to assist you with unbiased opinions on the best plans for you.
Also, VICAP is continuing its efforts to educate the community of seniors and soon to retire by providing free presentations in person or virtually. If you would like to set up a presentation concerning retirement, SSA, Medicare, and more please reach out to us so we can provide you with the most up to date and critical information.
The LOA has started receiving requests for Fraud presentations due to the uptick in fraudulent actions from insurance claims, medical billing fraud, tax, and romance scams. Now is the time to contact us for information and to request a presentation for your group, organization, or employees.
Save the Date!
We will be kicking off the official campaign for Let's Give Lunch in just a few weeks. Mark your calendar for Friday, June 17,2022, for LOA’s Let’s Give Lunch. We’ll have curbside and delivery available. Meals will be $20 and that takes care of your lunch as well as providing Meals on Wheels to seniors in our area. Information will be available soon on how you can participate in this year’s event - everything from purchasing a meal, participating in the Meals on Wheels Raffle, sponsoring, or volunteering for the event.
This month we are continuing our segment to highlight some of LOA’s services along with the impact it has in our community and the lives of our seniors. Most people think of LOA as Meals on Wheels; however, it takes more of LOA’s wrap around services to enable seniors to remain in their homes for as long as possible. This month we are highlighting three of our benefit programs:

  • VICAP - Answers to questions about Medicare, Medicaid, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D & long-term care insurance. Assistance figuring out medical bills.
  • Senior Medicare Patrol - Provides presentations to groups on scams, identity theft and preventing Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse. Also, counsels seniors on scam and fraud issues and helps to report Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse.
  • Benefits Enrollment Center –Assist low-income Medicare eligible seniors and persons receiving Social Security Disability to identify and apply for benefit programs, such as, but not limited to Senior Food Box, Medicare D, SNAP, etc.
LOA Center for Health & Wellness:
The signs have been erected and progress is moving forward on LOA’s Center for Health & Wellness. The center will house a Congregate Diners Club and Meals on Wheels site. In addition, LOA will sponsor Lunch and Learns and host medical providers on site with many exciting plans for future expansion. In preparation for the opening, we have hired a Community Health Worker to coordinate the activities for the center. We anticipate a June opening of the facility.
