Three New Vans for Senior Transportation | |
|
We are thrilled to announce that LOA is the recipient of an incredible $440,000 grant for senior transportation services!
Thanks to U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine who supported the initiative for LOA through the Virginia Senate Southwest & Southside Appropriations Bill.
Thanks to this grant, LOA has purchased three brand-new vans and hired two part-time drivers, which will enable us to provide 4,000 more rides for seniors to get to important doctors' appointments, the pharmacy, and the grocery store.

Volunteer Spotlight
Wow! For over 30 years, Tom Dalzell has been a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels and delivers the monthly Senior Food Box. His dedication to help others is inspiring. In his own words, Tom says of volunteering:
"I've been so blessed in my life, all the things I've been through in my life, it's just one way of giving back to the community. I always tell people: it's not the meal, it's the interaction that you have with the client. The fact that somebody is seeing them, every day."
Thank you, Tom, for your commitment to Meals on Wheels and Senior Food Box!

Senior Legal Safety Conference a Success
We understand the importance of planning and preparing for retirement and end of life, which is why we were delighted to have more than 60 attendees at LOA's Senior Legal Safety Conference on September 8. Special thanks to the Roanoke Law Foundation for sponsoring this valuable education opportunity and providing our community with these helpful resources, and to Harvest Ministries for hosting us in their beautiful space.
Attendees enjoyed presentations from ProMedica Hospice, Lotz Funeral Home, LOA's Director of Elder Rights Robbie Boyd, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Delaine Caldwell, the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office, and American National Bank & Trust Company. Thank You, Roanoke Greek Festival
LOA was honored to be selected as one of the charity beneficiaries of this year's Roanoke Greek Festival, which was held September 15-17. The festival, which had been on hiatus for a few years, was a huge success with beautiful weather and large crowds enjoying the delicious Greek food, music, culture, and tours of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
Many thanks to our LOA volunteers who helped out at the festival. Our sincere thanks go to festival chair Peter Simopoulos and Frances Simopoulos, LOA's own Danna Owen, Long Term Care Ombudsman, Father Theodore Lyketsos, and the generous congregation at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for your support of our older neighbors in need!
