Helping Older Persons Remain Independent for as Long as Possible.
LOA Health and Wellness Center
Opening Soon!
LOA is making plans to move into our new Health and Wellness Center the week of July 4th! We have set the date for our grand opening as September 13,2022 at 10:00 a.m. We are extremely excited for the potential this addition has to bolster our efforts to allow seniors to age in place. Social isolation is detrimental to our seniors, and we hope to expand services over the next several years to help us in our age friendly community efforts.
LOA recently received a grant to fund our first Community Health Worker which will assist us in making this facility a hub to help seniors live longer healthier lives and remain independent for as long as possible.
LOA Cooling Assistance
We’ve found ourselves in the heat of the Summer. We do have a limited number of ACs available and some box fans. You must call the office to complete an application and meet certain requirements. For ACs you must own your home and not have any air conditioning window units or systems in your home. Box fans are based on financial requirements along with the application. Please contact the office to see if you qualify. Special appreciation to the Home Depot Foundation for donating 8 AC units. If you would like to donate to the this program give us a call or go online.
Let's Give Lunch!
Let’s Give Lunch, which is LOA’s annual fundraiser to support Meals on Wheels, is now in the past. Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets, donated, volunteered, and participated in the Meals on Wheels raffle. We’re moving toward the $50K mark which is exceptional considering everything going on today. Special Thanks to our sponsors: Gold Sponsors WDBJ7 & WZBJ24. Bronze Sponsors: Anthem Healthkeepers Plus, Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group, Carilion Clinic, Pinnacle Financial partners, Southern Team & WestRock. Just a reminder to get your raffle bids in by July 1!.
If you have questions about your Medicare Advantage plan, need to switch plans, look at your part D prescription, or switch back to Original Medicare, please contact us to set up an appointment.

Also, VICAP is continuing its efforts to educate the community of seniors and soon to retire by providing free presentations in person or virtually. If you would like to set up a presentation concerning retirement, SSA, Medicare, and also FRAUD presentations due to exploitation with insurance, medical billing fraud, tax, and romance scams. Now is the time to contact us for information and to request a presentation for your group, organization, or employers.
This month we are highlighting:

Matter of Balance – Offers workshops for managing falls and increasing activity levels. Anyone who is concerned about falls, interested in improving balance, flexibility, strength, or has fallen in the past, or has restricted activities because of falling concerns, age 60 or older would benefit from the program. This program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls.
Walk with Ease (WWE) – A self-directed program that combines self-paced walks with information about health-related topics. WWE group sessions meet three times per week for 6 weeks. Trained group exercise leaders begin each session with a pre-walk discussion covering a specified topic related to exercise and arthritis, followed by a 10- to 40-minute walk that includes a warm-up and a cool-down.
Bingocize® - Bingocize® is a 10-week, evidence-based health program approved through both SNAP-Ed and The National Council on Aging (NCOA). Bingocize® combines exercise and health information with the familiar game of bingo, which has shown to be a great, fun way to get seniors moving and socializing. It’s meant to be played twice a week on nonconsecutive days, and each session usually lasts 45-60 minutes. Bingocize® can be implemented remotely or in a traditional face-to-face setting.
Area Plan for Aging Services
The LOA Board of Directors and Advisory Council will join together to review and approve the 4th and final year revisions to the Area Plan later this month on Wednesday, July 20th.
