Helping Older Persons Remain Independent for as Long as Possible.
RSVP today!

With much uncertainty the last couple years, we were able to get back to a familiar flow with LOA's Soup for Seniors this past month. Soup for Seniors is a food drive to support low income seniors in the harshest part of winter by delivering to them a loaded bag of shelf stable food. LOA was able to engage with numerous volunteers, donors, and recipients, realizing how much of the social aspect we missed out on the last couple years. With a big boost in volunteers, we were able to generate multiple bags with quick turnover. The outpouring of donations and time, always leaves us in awe of the kindness the Roanoke Valley offers. We were able to meet our goal in weight, with more than 45,000 pounds of food! We are still getting a few bags out which will allow us to meet that goal of delivering 2750 bags!

We could not have done it without our wonderful sponsor, AARP Virginia, and our partners Black Dog Salvage and Apria Healthcare. Thank you to our satellite locations including:

Vistar Eye Center

First Bank

RCPL Vinton

Salem Public Library, Salem VA

Apria Healthcare

Evergreen Burial Park

Mountain View Cemetery

We are extremely grateful to the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul for the use of their facilities. Finally, special thanks to our schools, companies, and individuals that volunteered, staff, donors, and the general public for this year’s success. Thank you for giving "a hot meal on a cold day" to thousands of seniors right here in our community!

Grants update

Thank you to everyone who made a gift to LOA recently. Your financial support helps keep our programs going. Last month the LOA was excited to be awarded the following grants:

  • LOA received a grant for $79,295 from USAging to provide flu and Covid vaccination clinics and make accessing vaccinations easier for older people. This will enable LOA to expand our efforts in the Center for Health & Wellness.

March for Meals

Celebrate with us during Community Champions Week. During the week of March 20-24, LOA's Meals on Wheels program will welcome local, state, and federal officials, and prominent community figures as they join us to deliver meals and raise awareness of the importance of this work. Celebrate with us! LOA is proud to join Meals on Wheels America’s national celebration of #MarchforMeals, a month-long campaign to bring awareness to our senior nutrition programs. For over 50 years, LOA has provided Meals on Wheels and other nutrition services to older adults in our region. Be sure to follow our social media during March for more information on March for Meals!
