Helping Older Persons Remain Independent for as Long as Possible. | |
The Local Office on Aging continues to strive to fulfill its mission of helping older persons remain independent for as long as possible.
But we can’t do it alone. Your donation today will help fill the plate of services where it is needed most.
-
$1,000 enables LOA to help more seniors with Transportation to the doctor, pharmacy, or grocery store.
-
$500 to assist one senior with In-Home Care.
-
$250 funds Center for Health & Wellness programs.
-
$100 gives eligible seniors much needed Legal Assistance.
-
$50 provides 5 people with Emergency Services.
-
$25 delivers 3 Meals on Wheels, or 2 Diner’s Club lunches.
Who does LOA help? It could be your mother, your neighbor, or it could even be you.
“Thank you for being here for us older people. It is not easy getting old!”

No Waiting List for Transportation
Since LOA’s new transportation program began in September, we are thrilled to announce that for the first time since 2021, there is NO waiting list for LOA’s Vital Transportation services!
Thanks to our brand-new vans and drivers, along with the hard work of LOA staff Arnita Preston, Elaine Engleman, and Robbie Boyd, the 90+ seniors that were on our waiting list are now receiving this important service. Our fabulous drivers, Vincent and Edward, are doing an amazing job providing transportation for our seniors, who are so very appreciative to ride in the LOA vans to their appointments.

Christmas Poinsettias Donated to Our Seniors
What an amazing gift! TFS Roanoke, Inc., a local flower wholesaler, graciously donated nearly 500 poinsettia plants for LOA's program participants! Thanks to our incredible staff and volunteers who worked hard to coordinate and deliver on the day before Thanksgiving, each Meals on Wheels participant and members of the Morningside Diner's Club received a beautiful plant for the season.
One of our seniors cried upon receiving her gift, saying that she never receives flowers. Thank you to TFS and our volunteers for giving smiles this holiday season!

We love our volunteers! LOA’s Meals on Wheels and monthly Senior Food Box programs could not happen without the dedication of hundreds of volunteers. Volunteers in the Roanoke and Botetourt areas were celebrated at an open house event on November 3 at LOA’s Center for Health and Wellness. Alleghany Highlands volunteers enjoyed a drive-thru event on November 9 in Covington. Members of the Covington Diner’s Club became cheerleaders for the afternoon, with pom poms and signs to thank our dedicated volunteers in the Alleghany Highlands.
Each volunteer received a beautiful Christmas stocking handmade and donated by Rosemary Sosnowski, a Meals on Wheels button, and a delicious, boxed lunch. We also had wonderful door prizes donated by local businesses for our volunteers.
Thank you, volunteers!

Thanks to Second Presbyterian Church
Pat Houghton and the wonderful parishioners at Second Presbyterian Church adopted a grand total of 70 seniors to give them Christmas gifts, as part of our Be A Santa To A Senior program. In addition to that, church members also donated 135 chocolate covered cherries for our Diner's Club participants. Wow! Your generosity will make the holidays bright for our seniors - thank you!

Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia Granted LOA's Wish
Our wish came true! Thank you to the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia and their generous donors. At their 35th anniversary gala, attendees voted on non-profits in our area to have a wish granted. LOA's wish was granted, and we received $1,500 to provide nutritional supplement drinks such as Ensure to seniors in our area! Many of our seniors have extra dietary needs or restrictions that can be met by drinking Ensure, but these supplements can be expensive. We are deeply grateful to the Community Foundation and their donors for helping seniors get the nutrition they need!
