This year, South Dakota ranked No. 2 in the Mercatus 2018 State Fiscal Condition index. That is up one position from No. 3 in 2017.
The ranking uses 13 indicators - including the ratio of cash to short-term debt, long-term expenditures, revenue, expenses, and and pensions - to examine how well each state is prepared to meet its financial obligations.
"In South Dakota, we are proud to deploy smart, solvent, fiscally responsible policies that set our state up for long-term financial health,” said GOED Commissioner Scott Stern. “We are particularly proud of the Mercatus ranking because it shows our pledge to financial stability.”
Commissioner Stern continued, “States that can prove to be good stewards of resources also prove to be great environments for companies to conduct their business in, and South Dakota is no exception. We are also one of the most business-friendly states in the nation.”
