LONG-TERM TRAFFIC SHIFT AND LANE REDUCTION SCHEDULED TO BEGIN ON I-64 EXPRESS LANES HAMPTON SEGMENT

Lane reductions on I-64 east and west between Rip Rap Road and Mallory Street to begin as early as the week of July 9

HAMPTON – As construction of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton segment ramps up, motorists on I-64 will encounter lane reductions, narrowing and traffic shifts in both directions between Rip Rap Road and Mallory Street (exit 268) for the duration of the project while crews prepare for construction in the median and the rehabilitation and widening of the I-64 west bridge over the Hampton River.

The anticipated travel impacts include:

  • Starting as early as Sunday, July 9 at 10 p.m., I-64 west will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes, and the travel lanes will shift to the north (away from the median) between Woodland Road (exit 267) and Rip Rap Road.
  • Starting as early as Sunday, July 16 at 9 p.m., I-64 east will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes, and the travel lanes will shift to the south (away from the median) between Rip Rap Road and Settlers Landing Road (exit 267).

Starting as early as mid-August, traffic on I-64 west will shift onto the eastbound Hampton River bridge while the westbound bridge is under construction.

  • These lane reductions will be in place into 2026, and additional traffic shifts will occur as the rehabilitation and widening of the westbound and eastbound Hampton River bridges progress.
  • Single-lane closures will also occur in the project area from west of Mallory Street (exit 268) to LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A) during off-peak travel hours during the daytime and overnight hours.

Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible and are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free.

The HREL Hampton Segment is part of the HREL Network, a continuous, 46-mile network of Express Lanes in each traffic direction on I-64, from east of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the I-64/I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake. The HREL Network is designed to transport more motorists through the region while helping to alleviate congestion and allowing motorists more travel options.

Motorists should plan their drive with VDOT’s free traffic information tools:
