Bits and Pieces

January 21, 2025

This is the week to look out for. Look out…there’s a new President of our country; there’s a new quilt, craft and sewing festival on the horizon; a brand new class of Art Textile with Kimi Komi (just adorable…come see the samples Shelby has made for you!); a BERNINA 990 Mastery Series for our existing B990 customers; and look out for a new Edge to Edge Embroidery class coming with Jan; plus Quilt Con is going to be in Phoenix again, Feb. 20-23, a 1 to 4 day QCT Software Camp at the beginning of April; and those are just the highlights to be on the lookout for!!! Look out for our traffic to pick up as our winter visitors return for our warmer, sunnier days and hope to catch some rays golfing, swimming, playing pickleball, going to spring training games here in the West Valley, the Phoenix Open/whatever-it’s -new-name-is, the multitude of car shows and high end car sales at Barrett-Jackson and all the rest, the opening of our newest casino, and again so much more!

A few more details to look out for: the Kimi Komi class is now filled, but if you’re interested, contact us and we’ll start a waitlist for the class to repeat. As some of you know, Jan has to have knee surgery and is awaiting a date, so she is pretty much out of commission for teaching or any Grace/longarm set-ups until further notice. She will be going over some of the finer points with our tech, Zoltan, and we should be back in full swing very soon. Our booth numbers at the Rusty Barn Show are 901-905, and we are in the green building where all the classes are being held, so please come by and see us!

This hits the multitude of things I wanted to tell you about, and I stayed home this morning to see the inauguration of our President. For most of my life, I have tried to catch all of the inaugurations, and I remember quite a few of them…even President Eisenhower many years ago. I came away from this one with a renewed sense of pride in our country, especially after so very many of our American achievements over the years were aptly pointed out. I tend to forget all the greatness, all the wonderful things this country has indeed achieved, and I think we can all be reminded of those things frequently. There were, for me, two important tag lines that I remember from the President’s speech. Just like so many of us remember the President Kennedy line of “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what You can do for your Country”, and the statement about American going to the moon, not because it is easy but because WE CAN! The two take-aways I was on the lookout for in today’s speech were: “The impossible is what we do best!” I absolutely love that line, and I don’t know if it resonated with anyone else. But please take a minute to think about what the words say about all of us as Americans, and take time to be proud in what we all have, will, and can accomplish!

Our world and our country mean a lot to me, as they do hopefully to every American, and I know I’m not alone in this. Sometimes we just need to be reminded. The second idea that I was looking out for had to do with common sense, and here I will paraphrase. The gist of the idea is that we had no manuals, guidebooks, or social media to help us win the wars we were in, or get to the moon, or split the atom, or build a car, develop electricity or telephones, or care for our fellow citizens when they are in dire times of need, or help or cure so many human medical issues, or even design and make a quilt for warmth or decoration. But we had the gift of COMMON SENSE, and we saw the big picture, and had to depend on our common sense to reach our goals!. We can achieve just about anything we can imagine and our common sense will guide us. I’ve heard it said that we’ve lost our common sense, but my feeling is that we will all make a renewed effort to bring it forward and use it more, teaching it and spreading it as we go along. And I feel uplifted. I was on the lookout for this feeling, and I found it. I hope we all do!

With that spirit, let’s make all patriotic fabrics our special of the week, at 20% off, in shop or online (www.sunvalleyquilts.com) when you give us the code. Code is 20PATRIOTS. We just got in some new ones which would make fabulous Quilts of Valor, and there are even a few kits—one in particular is in a keepsake box and depicts all branches of our military. It’s wonderful, and only one left! You don’t have to be on the lookout for American pride, because I feel like it’s all around us if we just let it in, like the air we breathe!!!  Have a great week, and hope to see you soon!
