2022 Racing is Almost Upon Us!
Registration for Lake Ontario Offshore Racing events remains open.
The 2022 Susan Hood Trophy Race (SHTR) presented by driveHG begins Friday June 3rd, 2022. Running since 1955 and fondly referred to as the 'Coolest Race on the Lake', the Susan Hood Trophy Race is a 75 nautical mile overnight race that kicks off LOOR's racing season. The event is open to fully crewed, short-handed and solo sailors.
Racing continues on Sunday, June 5th with the Lake Ontario Short Handed Racing Series (LOSHRS) Race #1 – a 16 nautical mile Course Race.
Use the links on the LOOR website to sign yourself up for one or ALL the races. And please remember, if you are new to offshore racing and have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to us at info@LOOR.ca or contact your club LOOR Ambassador. We'll help get you to the start line.
NEW THIS YEAR – LO300 Entries capped at 90
This year we are celebrating the 32nd LO300 Challenge presented by driveHG. To ensure that YB Trackers are available for every participant, entries are capped at 90 paid entries. The precedence of an entry will be based on the date and time of the payment in full of the total applicable fee.

LOOR has once again partnered with SailOnline.org to hold a virtual Susan Hood Trophy Race presented by driveHG. SOL will set a virtual, but identical course and, using real-time weather, race the V-SHTR from the comfort of your own home with the start at 8:00 PM EST.
Register your virtual boat at any time for free (for LOOR races every racer will have their own Beneteau First 36.7 to control), and if you’d like to practice using the interface you can join any race SOL has currently opened registration for on their platform. (Note that other races may use a different boat). The virtual Susan Hood course will open for practice at sailonline.org a few days before the race date of June 3, 2022.
The partnership will continue through the summer with a concurrent on-water and online version of the LO300 Challenge presented by driveHG. Again, for these races the weather will be real-time and the courses will be the same for both on-water and virtual racing.

Safety:
Offshore Personal Survival Courses
LOOR Offshore Special Regulations (OSR) for Category 3 to include Sail Canada’s prescriptions for safety training for participating race crews
The Sail Canada Prescription is:
Sail Canada prescribes that, starting January 1, 2023, at least 30% but not fewer than two crewmembers, including the Person in Charge, shall have undertaken a one-day Sail Canada accredited (or equivalent) coastal personal survival course within the five years before the start of the race.
While the Sail Canada Prescription is a requirement as of January 1, 2023, LOOR will amend it to phase in full requirements over several years. More details will be available at www.loor.ca.
While LOOR is phasing in the prescription, other Category 3 events may be requiring full implementation as of January 1, 2023. Individuals considering entering their boats or crewing in OSR Category 0, 1, or 2 events should determine the entry requirements around training as they may require the Offshore Personal Survival Course (2 day) instead of the Coastal Personal Survival Course (1 day). Completion of the Offshore Personal Survival Course (2 day) will meet the LOOR OSR Category 3 requirements.
While LOOR is phasing in the requirement and requirement is not for all crew, LOOR highly encourages and recommends that all sailors take the course as soon as possible as the contents apply and are of use to all sailing and sailors, whether racing or cruising.
Both courses are offered by Ontario Sailing with more information available HERE. Check this web site frequently as new dates for the courses are being constantly added.
For Canadian sailors outside Ontario, check the Sail Canada web site HERE. For sailors outside Canada, please check with your Member National Authority for equivalent courses that are accepted by Sail Canada, and hence LOOR. US sailors can check HERE.
Please send any comments or questions to Graham Dougall safety@loor.ca.

Crew Bank: Need Crew or Interested in Crewing?
If you are a sailor and interested in participating in one of the Lake Ontario Offshore Races, or a skipper who needs crew, use the Crew/Boats Boards on the Yacht Scoring Registration and Official Document page.
Registering sooner is better so you can get together and see or exhibit strengths or determine any gaps in experience. LOOR strongly recommends getting to know your new crew or skipper before going offshore or overnight races.

Sailors for the Seas:
LOOR is continually working to run eco-friendly events and has been striving to follow the suggestions outlined by Sailors for the Seas for Clean Regattas.
Clean Regattas is the world’s leading sustainability certification for all on-the-water, near-the-water, and water-loving events. Since the program’s inception in 2006, over 3,000 events have shown their commitments to sustainability by hosting Clean Regattas. This program has reached nearly 800,000 sailors and attendees in 50 countries. Clean Regattas is a free, self-assessment tool with powerful resources and support that awards certification levels from Participant to Platinum.
EDUCATING PARTICIPANTS
“[Hosting a Clean Regatta allowed us] the opportunity to educate board members, the race committee, and volunteers about sustainability, and [we saw] people’s attitudes change in real time!”
CREATING LASTING CHANGE
“The activities have become part of the way we think and act on a regular basis, and each year we look for new and additional things we can do.”
THE ADDED PROMOTIONAL VALUE
“It was well-received by our sponsors, who like being associated with a sustainable event.”
HAVING A SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT
“We had a successful regatta and were able to eliminate so many unnecessary things… and we didn't miss them at all. It was very satisfying to have one tiny bag of trash at the end and not see any litter during the event.”
INVOLVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
“We partnered with community organizations and businesses that would not normally be involved with the regatta or sailing in general.”
FOSTERING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
“[A Clean Regatta] empowers and encourages all who participate to advocate for a cleaner ocean. Both junior and senior participants have a common cause.”

- driveHG has, as announced in our last newsletter, returned as title sponsor for the entire LOOR series of races for 2022.
-
North Sails and Access Abilities is once again putting up the LOSHRS Sail Draw Contest, the best chance on the lakes to win a new sail!
The Rigging Shoppe has once again sponsored the LOOR races at the First Mate Level. We thank Carolyn for her ongoing support for the LOOR as her motivation was to give back to the sailing and racing community.
Fogh Boat Supplies is sponsoring LOOR again this year at the Crew Level and will also be setting up their tent on the lawn of PCYC to take care of last minute needs of the boats and crews. Additionally, Fogh is donating a percentage of their race tent sales to the LOOR as well!
Gallaghers’ Skipper Plan will once again sponsor the postrace Chili which is always welcome by the weary LO300 racers. The hot bowl of Chili comes complete with bread rolls and butter.
SeaConquest is back as well sponsoring the races at the Crew Level. They are also offering 25% off their innovative hull cleaning services. Something to consider prior to a big race like the LOOR races.
Pat Sturgeon Yachts has once again contributed at the Crew Level. Pat is a yacht broker as well as representing Hanse and J yachts.
All of our sponsors can be found near the end of our newsletters and on the website. Please consider supporting them as they support us!
