Chair's Message:

Racing is Underway... with more to come:

LOOR is very pleased to report that this year’s LOOR race series presented by driveHG is off to a great start. The Susan Hood Trophy Race, this year sponsored by Club April Marine, almost had a thunderstorm delay at the start, but everyone stayed dry, and we started on time. For a complete change, the evening was quite warm and light winds which built as the night went on. The race offered something for every racer as Saturday morning was blue sky and good winds on the way back to Port Credit.

The next day the first LOSHRS race was a light air beam reach as the winds were getting lighter and again, beautiful blue sky. This last weekend, LOSHRS races 2 and 3 featured strong and gusty winds on Saturday to test the crews skill, and light winds for the Sunday to test their patience. You couldn’t ask for any better and we had more racers participate in both the Susan Hood and LOSHRS races then in each of the prior three years!

Now we are looking forward to the next races in the series. The Lake Ontario 300/600 race is set for June 15th and this year we have more planned for the Friday night and Saturday morning festivities. We are having a Tech Talk session from 5pm to 6pm on Friday night which will have 6 speakers present on topics that are of interest to sailors and boaters as well as more sponsors with tents to go speak to. Please see the schedule of speakers below and make sure you’re are ready to go at 5pm…should be a lot of fun and very interesting.

To help skippers and their crew streamline the LO300/600 registration process and find details about the year's events, we have a new web page that contains key information needed for the event.

Go to https://www.loor.ca/2023lo300registrationtips and let us know what you think.

As always, there will be great entertainment on the Friday afternoon and night, great prizes to raffle off, and probably some beer, wine, liquor and good friends to enjoy the evening with. The skippers meeting Friday night, featuring a live weather update from Ron Bianchi, is always a highlight. On Saturday morning, as breakfast sponsored by AccessAbilities is going on, we’ll show a live hull cleaning on the monitors for your enjoyment.

See below for the timing of this years LO300 events.

Beyond the LO300/600, the rest of the LOSHRS races continue with the 100 miler race on August 19th and the Dalhousie Yacht Club weekend on September 16th and 17th. This year we are also adding a Cruising Rally on the same weekend as the LOSHRS races also down to Port Dalhousie. We’re hoping cruisers will enjoy the same great weekend at Dalhoisie Yacht club without having to race.

Weather you’re a cruiser, racer, volunteer, or committee member, the 2023 is going fantastically well and we’re all excited to see it become one of the best years yet. There is still time to register for the LO300/600 and LOSHRS races and join the fun so encourage others to sign up.

There is lots of info on all the races at www.loor.ca , the information link above and further details below, so please visit the site and join us.

Many thanks and great racing/sailing to all,

Terence (Terry) Kuehn and Monica Doedens

Virtual Racing Returns for the Third Year Running

Sailonline is again partnering with LOOR to offer you a virtual version from our annual Lake Ontario 300. Sailonline is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers.

Sailonline will be racing its virtual Beneteau First 36.7 in the race:

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge (July 15, 2023): A 300nm figure-eight circumnavigation of Lake Ontario. Since 1990, the LO300 has been a main event for offshore racing on the Great Lakes. As probably the longest freshwater race in the world, the course reaches the Niagara River, the gateway to the St. Lawrence Seaway at Main Duck Island in the Thousand Islands.

The virtual version of the real on-water race will open several days before race start to allow practice on-course - the techniques for sailing on Sailonline are the same for all races, so all LOOR members, friends and family are invited to start racing for free on Sailonline as soon as each race opens!
