Lake Ontario Offshore Racing - Newsletter

Dreaming of Sailing.

The ground is still frozen but the days are getting longer and, just like us, we bet you are dreaming about sailing. The LOOR Committee is meeting regularly and planning for a full racing season in 2021. If it can happen we will make it happen!

Rates & Dates for the 2021 Racing Season have been set, NOR's are being finalized, and logistics are well in hand. Registration will open on February 28, 2021 and LOOR continues to host our Webinar Series to help prepare racers for an exciting 2021 Racing Season.

The LO600 is Back in 2021
Great news for all those ultra-long distance racers, the LO600 returns in 2021. The Lake Ontario 600 Challenge is a 600 nautical mile race, consisting of a "Twice Around" sailing of the LO300 Main Duck Island Course. The LO600 has been held every second year since 2014, providing the opportunity to circumnavigate Lake Ontario twice.

LOSHRS Awards Banquet
The LOSHRS Awards Banquet which would normally take place this month will obviously not happen, but don’t despair. We have flags for the winners of the races we held last season and are planning for the distribution of those flags. Once the winners have their flags, we are going to hold a virtual awards banquet to celebrate those winners. Stand by for details.

Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) offering a virtual Cold Water Workshop
Tuesday February 23rd. & Thursday February 25th 8:00p.m. - 10:30 p.m. EST

If you are a first responder, work or just spend time recreating on or near cold water, this workshop is for you. You will learn everything you need to know to survive an accidental cold water immersion and also how to help others who may have become hypothermic. It is hosted by the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC), delivered over Zoom.

Suddenly Alone – via Zoom
Saturday, February 20, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Have you ever wondered what you would do if you were suddenly alone on your boat? If your sailing partner fell in, and you had to handle the boat by yourself to get back to them and get them onboard…what would you do? This 3-hour seminar will show you the manoeuvres to manage the boat, the safety equipment that could facilitate onboarding and preventive measures you could employ for future. Presented by Diane Reid and ABYC.

Crew Bank - Need Crew or interested in Crewing?

If you are a sailor and interested in participating in one of the Lake Ontario Offshore Races, or a skipper who needs crew, use the Crew/Boats Boards on the Yacht Scoring Registration and Official Document page.

Go to the Crew Bank page on the LOOR site.
Sail Rating / Handicap

Sail Measurement Certificate
If you’re purchasing a new sail or having a sail serviced at a sailmaker’s, it’s to your benefit to have the sailmaker measure the sails and provide you with a Sailmakers’ Sail Measurement Certificate. This will save having to measure the sail later. This especially applies to older sails as they shrink in the dimensions that are measured for handicap rating. Shrink enough to generate a slight change in your rating!

North Sail PHRF and IRC Measurements
Once again, North Sails Toronto is providing complimentary sail measurement ahead of the 2021 sailing and racing season.

If you need to get your sails measured or if you have a new sail contact North Sails today @ Toronto@northsails.com to schedule.

Although this only takes about 30-minutes, don't leave this to the last minute (and certainly not the day before the race).
