Block High School students receive college prep access and support from LOSFA

Following several reports about students at Block High School in Jonesville, Louisiana, protesting conditions they felt were not preparing them for college - due to lack of supplies and a need for certified teachers - staff at the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance offered help.

“I’m glad LOSFA stepped in,” said Michael Norris, a senior at Block High. “I used to be embarrassed to be a Block High student, but now I feel like people are listening to us and we’re getting what we need.”

Block High School students traveled to Grambling State University on Thursday to attend LOSFA's Fly Tour . It is LOSFA's 'Financial Literacy for You Tour,' where workers present college information in a fun drama.

Block High students and teachers have been fighting for quality education since last year.

LOSFA has taken the initiative to help the students become college ready.

"I'm glad they came," one student said. "If it were not for LOSFA , I would still be searching for what college I want to go to, so I'm glad LOSFA stepped in."

Students get glimpse of McNeese engineering program
February 20, 2019

More than 450 students from 17 area high schools toured the engineering department at McNeese State University Tuesday as part of National Engineers Week.

* LOSFA supported 60 10th-12th grade students from Lagrange High School who expressed an interest in engineering.*

McNeese students demonstrated their skills in computer programming, land surveying, video game design and robotics competitions.

Louisiana community colleges too costly, state's higher education chief says

Louisiana students are paying more than the regional and national averages to attend community colleges and the issue needs to be addressed, Higher Education Commissioner Kim Hunter Reed said Monday.

"The bottom line is this: If you can't afford it you can't achieve it," Reed told the Press Club of Baton Rouge.

Louisiana Tech named a Military Friendly School for the 6th year in a row

For the sixth consecutive year, Louisiana Tech University has been named a Military Friendly School.

Earlier this year, Louisiana Tech partnered with the Bossier Parish Community College to open a Veterans Resource Center in the Academic Success Center in Bossier City. The facility provides resources for veterans and their families.
UL-Lafayette Considered Top Eco-Friendly School in Louisiana

From composting, to recycling, to solar energy, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette is now internationally renowned for it’s efforts in being Eco-friendly.

The Indonesian GreenMetric Rankings were recently released, and it places UL-Lafayette as the 25th college in the U.S. for eco-friendliness.

The ranking also puts UL-Lafayette as the least wasteful college in Louisiana.
