Churches in the Holy Land vary in architecture and style, as well as denomination. During the course of our pilgrimage to the Holy Land, we visited a variety of ornate and polished Roman Catholic churches, dark and smoke scarred Orthodox churches, and even a Lutheran church with German and Arabic writing. The Orthodox churches were often painted with Byzantine style icons similar to the one on the left depicting Jesus' resurrection from the dead. The painters or iconographers are not supposed to be creative in their painting. In fact, they are to replicate a copy of previously painted icon as closely as possible. They believe their work is copying a manuscript, and worshippers are invited to read them.
In the western church tradition, the good news of Easter is often portrayed with a single, victorious image of Jesus holding a flag upright with his foot upon the conquered foe. In the Orthodox tradition, the iconographer tries to reveal and explore the meaning of this event. Christ's robe is seen flowing upward and outward, this symbolizes his radical descent into Hell to save those who have died in the flesh. The golden bars by his feet are the gates of Death, which he has broken and torn apart. There are keys floating in the abyss below, which symbolize that he has entered and conquered both death and Hell and releasing those who had been in prison. Jesus is barefoot which emphasizes an ancient Orthodox hymn, Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death.
The two figures whom Christ has grasped with his hands and is pulling from tombs are Adam and Eve, symbolizing that his victory redeems all mankind, even back to the beginning of time. Finally, we see the holy prophets and king on either side who predicted Jesus' coming into world.
This Easter morning, I will be meditating on the work of the musicians artists who throughout the ages have helped preachers proclaim the good news of Christ's resurrection. Words alone simply can't tell the powerful story of the new life, you and I are have been given in Jesus. Christ's resurrection from the dead is a mystery, but it is the event which makes life worth living.
Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!
Happy Easter! Pastor Arden D. Haug

On April 19, we invite families with children Grades 1-4 to gather together and talk about The Ten Commandments and rules. This will be an interactive time of faith for parent and child. Details will be coming in the coming weeks to Grades 1-4 families.

Working Speaker Series
Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do. Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work, and this series gives us an opportunity to learn more about what they do.
The next segment of the series will be Sunday, April 22nd featuring Mary Abbe Hintz. As art critic and art news reporter at the Star Tribune, Mary had the privilege and pleasure of writing for 32 years about artists, gallery shows, museum exhibitions, and cultural finances, buildings, personnel and politics. Before that she worked at Walker Art Center, the University of Chicago Press, and elsewhere. She retired from deadlines in 2016.
Mary's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes will be an informal talk by Mary, leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.
