2015 Leadership Lafayette Program

Oxford, Miss.-Emerging community leaders of Oxford and Lafayette County once again have an opportunity to participate in the annual Leadership Lafayette program presented by the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce.

The eight-month program, beginning in January 2015, is a series of training sessions and activities, designed for emerging community leaders.  It is intended to assure the continuity of leadership in Lafayette-Oxford-University community and assist already established community leaders, who seek more effective ways to contribute to the community.  In addition to the sessions, class members will also participate in a community based project.

"Leadership Lafayette is a great opportunity for community leaders to engage in their community through networking, education and group projects. Each session is coordinated by alumni of the program who put considerable thought into making each year the best it can be," said Torie Marion, Leadership Lafayette Program Chair.

The objectives of the program include identifying potential community leaders, developing individual leadership potential, acquiring knowledge about community and current issues in Lafayette County, creating dialogue and rapport among participants and

current leaders, and promoting a sense of "community" through shared efforts benefiting the local community.

Each month will involve an all day session from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  These sessions are packed with information about Oxford and Lafayette County and the needs of the community. Participants will acquire knowledge about current issues that surround them, as well as focused leadership training.

Leadership Lafayette participants will be selected by a steering committee on the basis of completed applications received by Wednesday, December 12, 2014.  Preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to their potential for leadership, would contribute to the overall diversity and strength of the class and have available time to commit to the program and future community service.  Program participation is limited to 25.  The program requires a tuition fee of $350 upon acceptance.

Leadership Lafayette is a program of the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce and sponsored in part by Chaney's Pharmacy, Charter Road Hospitality Group, and Holli's Sweet Tooth.

The 2015 Leadership Lafayette Steering Committee includes: Torie Marion, Leadership Lafayette Chair, Visit Oxford;  Wayne Andrews, Yoknapatawpha Arts Council; Steven Ash, Newk's; Sierra Cannon, Re/Max Legacy Realty; Kenney Ferris, Visit Oxford;

YPO Makes Sizeable Donation to holding Hands

Young Professionals Make Sizeable Donation

to the Holding Hands organization,

Make Major Impact on Community
YPO Logo

Oxford, Miss.-"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."--- Margaret Mead.  No truer words could be spoken about the impact the Young Professionals of Oxford (YPO) have made recently to Holding Hands Resale Shop this holiday season.

The members of YPO, a program of the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce, wanted  to make a difference in this community and recently when they presented a $10,000 check to Holding Hands Resale Shop -  that impact was felt as it had a ripple effect across Lafayette County.

"The fact that YPO choose my mission is very humbling. Words cannot express how much this group of young people mean to me," said Donna Howard, owner and director of Holding Hands Resale Shop.  "They worked so hard.  I appreciate what they did for us. Some of the money will be used to buy some new fixtures for the store."

Last year YPO set as a goal to have a lasting impact on the citizens of our community.  With that goal in mind they decided to make a long term plan to raise money for Holding Hands throughout the year at their monthly meetings, and close out their fundraising with their 3rd annual community event Our Team, Our Town.

"We are so excited Our Team, Our Town was such a success this year. YPO really wants to make a positive impact on this community, " said Eli Gross, YPO President.  "The members of YPO worked diligently the over the past year, working directly with Holding Hands on their specific needs.  It is awesome to see that hard work pay off. We can't wait to start planning for next year!"

Our Team, Our Town was an event held at the Lyric for the community to gather and watch the Ole Miss/Vanderbilt football game earlier in the season.  The 3rd annual event was a huge success, bringing in thousands of dollars raised for Holding Hands, as well as visibility for their cause.

The evenings fundraising, done through ticket sales, sponsorships, and a silent auction, combined with the funds that had been raised throughout the year, resulted in not only a substantial donation to program, but also the donation of a much-needed delivery truck for Holding Hands to use to pick up donations.  Cannon Motor Company partnered with YPO on the truck and made this dream become a reality for Holding Hands.

"The truck has helped so much.  I don't have the stress of trying to figure out how to pick up donations.  Life is so much easier & our donations have increased," added Howard.

"We want to say a big thank you to the community for attending this special event and to our many sponsors for their support for a great cause! We could not have made such an impact for Holding Hands without our generous sponsors," said Angela Brown. one of the YPO event coordinators.

YPO began in 2009 as a networking group of active, ambitious young professionals in the Lafayette County area, and is part of the program of work for the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce.  Participants range in age from 21-45 year old professionals.   This is a place for the next generation of leaders to share their big ideas, test their hunches, and participate in dynamic conversations with a group of professionals who are passionate about building better places to live and work.

Holding Hands Resale Shop employs persons with special needs in a safe work environment, in hopes of helping them to achieve independence & self respect. Each employee is provided specialized training matched to their unique abilities assuring a high level of success and accomplishment.
