| | Spotlight on Student Attendance and Awareness | | |
Each month, the LP Link will spotlight an area of District focus with the goal of sharing valuable information and resources with our school community. The start of the new school year provides a unique opportunity to highlight the importance of student attendance on learning. In fact, September is recognized as National Attendance Awareness Month to help spread awareness regarding why maintaining attendance in school is essential for academic success. Daily attendance is important to ensure Lancers are engaged in classroom activities and have the opportunity to make valuable connections with staff and other students. For your reference, included is a link to the 2025-2026 Attendance and Behavioral Expectations, a document which families acknowledge as a part of the online registration process. This resource can also be located on the District website and Student Launchpad.
Chronic Absenteeism
Annually in October, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) releases the Illinois School Report Card that measures all school districts on several metrics including “Chronic Absenteeism,” which is defined as when a student is absent for 10% or more of school days, including excused and unexcused absences, and out-of-school suspensions. Surprisingly, missing only as few as two days a month on average flags a student as chronically absent. While the District’s last reported rate of 22% from the 2023-2024 school year was down three percentage points from 2022-2023–and is better than the State’s average of 26%--there are too many students falling into this chronically absent category each year. Despite some lingering opinions from remote learning that suggests in-person attendance at school is unnecessary, daily attendance in class is valuable to the learning process.
More than any other factor that impacts learning, student attendance is one area that is a joint, collaborative effort between schools and families. Teaching students the value of daily attendance and working together to overcome barriers to school attendance is vital, especially early in the school year. This year our joint goal is to work together to improve daily attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism. As a school district, we commit to providing our students with meaningful and engaging classroom experiences designed to prepare them for the future. We commit to partnering with our families to reduce barriers to daily attendance. We ask for our families to also commit to partnering with us to improve students attendance by prioritizing daily attendance and making sure our students arrive at school on time, every day.
Attendance Notification
The Student Services Team (SST) and staff work to create a positive school culture and address student attendance concerns to minimize the impact missed time has on student learning. Starting the week of Monday, August 25, Lake Park will implement consistent communication and support regarding student attendance. If the Attendance Office does not receive an absence notification from a parent/guardian, an auto-generated message will be sent to families via email, voicemail, and text message in the morning for the first periods of the day and in the afternoon for the remaining periods.
Beginning this school year, targeted outreach beyond the daily notification will notify families of significant absences:

At 5 absences: Parents/guardians will receive communication from the attendance office and deans to ensure early support and intervention.

At 10 absences: Parents/guardians will be contacted again, and a parent meeting may be scheduled to review supports and expectations. At this stage, medical or legal documentation will be required for any further absences to be excused. Students who continue to accumulate absences may also lose privileges such as participation in dances, athletic events, field trips, and parking.

First Semester Safety Week: August 18-22

During the Tuesday, August 12 Institute day, all Lake Park employees participated in an annual safety in-service presented by the Roselle Police Department. This valuable, comprehensive training included a review of ALICE protocols to help prepare staff for decisions they may have to face in an emergency situation.
This week, Lancer students engaged in Safety Week as teachers in all classes reviewed the basic emergency procedures. Actual evacuation, lockdown, and severe weather drills were conducted during classes to practice the lessons.
Another District priority includes addressing the vehicular traffic at East Campus during daily pick up and drop off. Families who drive their freshmen and/or sophomore students should read this message for important expectations this year.
See Something, Say Something
Safe2Help is a 24/7 program that offers students a safe, confidential way in which to share information that might help prevent suicides, bullying, school violence, or other threats to school safety. Safe2Help encourages students to “Seek Help Before Harm” through a variety of channels (a mobile app, text, phone, or website) at no cost to students.
For easy access, banners with a QR code and number to text for assistance appear throughout the campuses and are printed on the back of student ID cards.

Honor Roll Celebrates Student Achievement
Recognition will transition from semester-based to an annual process.

Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, Lake Park High School is updating its Honor Roll recognition process to continue celebrating student academic accomplishments in a new way.
The names of students who earned Honor Roll distinction during the 2024-2025 spring semester are now showcased on the District website, making it easy for Lancer families and the school community to view and celebrate student achievement.
Honor Roll will transition from a semester-based recognition to an annual process. Eligibility will now be calculated at the end of the school year in May, ensuring the recognition reflects a student's full academic performance and cumulative GPA.
Congratulations to all the students who qualified for Honor Roll based on their weighted grade point average calculated from the prior semester. Lake Park's administration and staff look forward to continuing this long-standing tradition and shining a spotlight on the outstanding achievements of Lancers.

Seeking Global Citizens for Upcoming Travel
Attend an informational meeting about a student trip to Peru next summer.

Lake Park High School’s Spanish program is planning a travel trip to Peru for June 2026. Current sophomores, juniors, and seniors can apply for the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and culture! The trip will include chances to explore Lima, Lake Titicaca, Cusco and the Sacred Valley, and, of course, Machu Picchu.
This trip is open to students in the Class of 2026, 2027, or 2028 who are taking Spanish 3 or higher this school year. Make plans to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, August 26 at 6:15 p.m. in the West Campus Collab Center. Applications will be available at the meeting, and attendance by a parent/guardian is required in order for students to be considered for the trip.

Curriculum Night

Parents/guardians are invited to attend the annual Curriculum Night at East Campus on Wednesday, August 27 and West Campus on Wednesday, September 3. Both events run from 6:30 to 8:35 p.m. View the schedule for these upcoming events.
During the East Campus event, attendees will have the opportunity to follow their student's schedules and learn more about each teacher's learning objectives and expectations. Your student’s counselor, the school nurse, and additional student support staff will be available to meet with you to answer any questions during your student's study hall or lunch period.
West Campus families will have the opportunity to learn more about their student’s classes, meet the Student Services Team (SST), and visit the library. This year, the program will continue offering five session options and begin with an opening meeting in the auditorium.

Please be advised of the following protocols and general information regarding event attendance, especially as it relates to non-Lake Park students:
- Any non-high school age student attending contests at the high school must be accompanied by a supervising adult, preferably their parent or guardian, who will be on site the entire event. Students arriving without an adult chaperone will not be admitted to the game.
- Only high school students from the competing schools are welcome to attend. High school age students that do not attend Lake Park or the opposing school are not allowed to attend unless they arrive as a guest of a Lake Park family with an adult who is remaining on site.
- Backpacks and opened outside beverage containers are not allowed in our stadium. There is a no reentry policy, so please plan accordingly and bring what you need to be prepared for all weather.
- If your students are not being driven home by the adult chaperone, please arrange pick up immediately following the contest in the circle drive in front of West Campus and not in the stadium parking lot. This helps to reduce traffic near the stadium.
- Admission is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children and students over the age of 5. Cash or electronic payment options are available. Advance tickets for most events are available at the
- Lake Park Go Fan site: https://gofan.co/app/school/IL15547 Senior citizens over the age of 65 are admitted free. Current Lake Park Booster Club Family Passes (Navy) are gladly accepted. Lake Park students are always admitted free to their games! Students will be required to scan their student ID at the event entrance.

Prevention Resource Guide
In partnership with Lancer families, Lake Park is committed to keeping students as safe as possible, and this includes sharing helpful resources for continued dialogue at home. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) developed a resource guide for families, Sexual Abuse Response and Prevention Resource Guide. While parents/guardians may not know the indicators of a child being abused, and may not feel prepared if their child discloses abuse to them, help is available. This is why the resource guide was created. In addition to conduct expectations already shared with students, the Lancer Period lesson on Thursday, November 13 will deliver important resources related to Erin’s Law and Faith’s Law to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves.
Insurance Options
Lake Park High School District 108 offers all families the option to purchase non-school related accident coverage as well as dental accident coverage. Any enrolled student is eligible for coverage plans that are offered by Special Markets Insurance Consultants, Inc. To research the available coverage plans - including costs, benefits, exclusions and any reductions or limitation - view the student accident enrollment application and instructions. Parents or guardians of students are responsible for enrollment and premium payment. Visit the website to enroll online or mail the application with payment to the plan administrator.
Integrated Pest Management
Lake Park High School District 108 has adopted an Integrated Pest Management program that minimizes the use of pesticides in school buildings and on school grounds. The policy, in accordance with state laws, also includes a registry whereby residents can be notified in writing two days before any pesticides are used in the school buildings or on school grounds.
If you would like to receive written notification prior to the application of any pest control materials, download and complete a form with your contact information. The form must be returned to the main office at either campus or District office by Friday, September 19 to receive written notification.

GPS Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families
This year, GPS Parent Series proudly celebrates 30 years of providing free, expert-led resources to support families. The one hour programs equip parents, caregivers, and educators with practical strategies to build stronger individuals, families, and communities.
GPS will present over 50 events this year in multiple languages. World-renowned authors and clinicians deliver timely, research-based guidance to promote positive youth development and well-being for all ages. GPS is completely free and open to everyone—no sign up is required!
