Learn the Rules Differences Between

Match Play and Stroke Play

Date: June 12

Time: 5:30 pm

Instructor: Mary Shepperd

Cost: FREE

Please join us for an interactive Zoom call on Thursday, June 12, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., to discuss the vast differences between the Match-Play and Stroke-Play Rules of Golf. Handouts will be provided prior to the call, and there will be plenty of time for all your questions.

Whether you are participating in the qualifiers for the San Diego 2025 Cal Cup Team or want to learn the differences between the two, this is an excellent opportunity to learn the Rules from the comfort of your own home!

Mary Shepperd, who has over 20 years of experience volunteering as a Rules official in both Northern and Southern California and has worked over 50 USGA national championships, including the US Open and many Women's US Opens, will be hosting. She’ll be fresh off working NCAA Division 1 Men’s Finals to be held at Omni La Costa, and will be sure to cover any interesting rulings she experienced during the Match Play portion for us.

Here are a couple of challenging questions to test your Match Play rules knowledge!

Ex 1. Your birdie putt came to rest overhanging the cup’s edge, and your opponent quickly conceded a par. Do you still get the reasonable amount of time for the ball to drop in for a birdie?

Ex 2. In a four-ball match, Cindy, a member of Team A, was about to putt and asked what everyone was laying. Stacey (who was on Team B) misspoke and said she was laying 3 when she was really laying 4. This caused Cindy to conclude that her putt didn’t matter and pick up her ball. It was an honest mistake, and Stacey then realized her error and corrected it, but now what? Are players obligated to answer such questions as “What is everyone lying?”. What if the answer is unintentionally wrong?

Answers to the above examples:

Ex 1. Yes! You still get the reasonable time to reach the hole and the 10 seconds to see if the ball falls in. If it does fall in within 10 seconds, you have holed out with a birdie. Interesting: There is no penalty for your opponent for making a fast concession, BUT if your opponent gets a little quick with their fingers and lifts the ball before 10 seconds are up, the Rules treat the ball as being holed by the prior stroke under Rule 13.3b. Google “Madelene Sagstrom, 2021 Solheim Cup”.

Ex 2. If a player asks an opponent what they lay, the opponent must answer before the player makes their next stroke. If they make a mistake and give the wrong number, it must be corrected before the player makes their next stroke, or “takes a similar action”; here, that includes picking up the ball sans marking. Under Rule 3.2d(1), the penalty is loss of hole for the opponent who does not correct this mistake in time. It does not matter if the answer was unintentionally wrong.

We have extended the deadline to register for the Cal Cup Qualifiers.

We are looking for members who enjoy match play to play qualifying matches against San Diego members to represent our chapter at the 2025 Cal Cup in Sacramento, August 1-3, 2025.  This is a fun and competitive match play event which includes other California chapter members.  We will keep registration open until this Friday (April 11) for now.

If you have any questions, please contact either Stacey Hayashi or Karen Bridges.

What is Cal Cup?

This is a team match-play competition between 8 California chapters, similar to the Solheim Cup. Day 1 is partner day in either a better ball or alternate shot format. Day 2 is individual head-to-head singles matches.

A 12-player team will represent San Diego at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento from August 1 to 3, 2025.

You must play three (3) pre-selected matches against a fellow San Diego member and meet the qualifier eligibility criteria listed below to qualify. Players with the best records will make the team!
