Rules Quiz

Know Your Golf Definitions

1.   A player may use a pebble to mark the position of their ball?

a.    True

b.    False

2.   If it is not physically possible to drop the ball in any part of the identified relief area under a relief option, the player is not allowed relief from the condition under that relief option.

a.    True

b.    False

3.   When two holes share the same putting green, the hole which the player is not playing is an immovable obstruction from which the player is entitled to relief.

a.    True

b.    False

4.   A closed (not locked) gate on a boundary fence interferes with a player's swing. The player may open the gate to play their shot.

a.    True

b.    False

5.   A player's ball lies on an aeration hole on the fringe surrounding a putting green. The player is allowed relief under Rule 16.1 (Abnormal Course Conditions).

a.    True

b.    False

Answers

1.    False. A ball-marker must be an artificial object. A pebble is a natural object.

2.    True. The player is not guaranteed a good lie in the relief area. If the player is not able to drop a ball in the relief area (because of a tree or bush), the player can only proceed under another relief option of that Rule or proceed under another Rule (Unplayable Ball or Stroke and Distance). See Clarification Nearest Point of Complete Relief/4. In the situation, when the player has lifted the ball to take relief and subsequently decides not to take relief, the player may replace the ball at its original (or estimated) location for one penalty stroke. See Rule 9.4a.

3.    False. A player is entitled to relief from the hole not being played on a "double green" under Rule 16.1a for an abnormal course condition, but it is not because it is an immovable obstruction. This is because the hole is considered ground and is under repair. Per the definition of GUR, Ground Under Repair also includes any hole made by the Committee or maintenance staff in setting up the course (such as a hole where a stake has been removed or the hole on a double green being used for the play of another hole.) If the Committee had split the green into two greens, the player would be required to take relief under Rule 13.1f for a wrong green. See Definition of Ground Under Repair

4.    True. A gate in a boundary fence is an obstruction, and it is not part of the boundary object. See Definition of Boundary Object. A gate in any position that is not locked is a movable obstruction. The player may move the gate to another position prior to their stroke. See Rule 15.2a(1). A locked gate is an immovable obstruction that cannot be moved, but the player is allowed free relief away from the gate under Rule 16.1a. The Committee may define the gate as an integral object from which the player would not be allowed free relief. See Definition of Boundary Object and Definition of Movable Obstruction

5.    False. Aeration holes in the general area and on a putting green are not considered ground under repair. However, the Committee may make a Local Rule when a ball lies in an aeration hole to move it to the side of the aeration hole. See Definition of Ground Under Repair
