EDUCATION CORNER

Play the ball as it lies and the course as it is found

Can I… tap down a divot or some grass near my ball… move sand near my ball… rake footprints in a bunker left by the group in front of me… break a branch that is in my backswing?

The Rules of Golf have two great principles: Play the ball as it lies and the course as it is found. Therefore, a player may not press down a divot or grass near the ball if that would improve the lie of the ball (or the player’s stance, swing, or line of play). If there is sand near the ball, it may only be removed from the putting green or the teeing area, but nowhere else on the course (if it would cause an improvement to one of those areas mentioned above). Footprints left in a bunker may be raked for the care of the course, only if it does not improve the player’s lie, stance, area of intended swing, or line of play. So, if those footprints are not near your ball, go ahead and rake them. If you have a branch in your backswing, you cannot break it off if that were to improve the area of your backswing. However, if you break a branch during your stroke and you complete the stroke, there is no penalty.

The penalty for improving your lie in golf (altering conditions affecting your stroke, stance, or line) is typically the General Penalty: two penalty strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play, under Rule 8.1.
