LPLC Quarterly eNewsletter (Winter 2024)

Executive Director's Update

Dear LPLC Community —

LPLC’s upcoming Pathways to Learning Event, Better Together: Changing Lives through Research and Relationships, captures the essence of our mission. The reliance on research and relationships is readily apparent in our clinical services and through our academic intervention. Psychoeducational evaluations at Lee Pesky Learning Center are conducted using highly specialized, research-based measurement tools while academic intervention practices are solidly based in evidence from applied research. Yet, neither our clinical nor academic services are provided in a vacuum – they rely on trust, connection, and the development of a relationship with every individual.

Palmer Parker, education leader and author of “The Courage to Teach,” writes about the importance of building “trustworthy relationships [and] tenacious communities of support.” In essence, individual growth relies on collective strength.

In this eNewsletter, two professionals from LPLC’s clinical services team touch upon the importance of research and relationships, highlighting our organization’s core belief that both are Better Together. Thank you for the strength you provide to those we serve and we look forward to celebrating LPLC with you on May 17th!

In partnership,

Lindy Crawford

Tier 3 Spotlight:

Dr. Anne Clohessy

As Clinical Services Director, Dr. Anne Clohessy supervises LPLC’s evaluation and counseling services. During her 25 years as an LPLC clinical psychologist, Dr. Clohessy has overseen more than 2,800 evaluations that have helped individuals of all ages better understand how they learn, and how their families, teachers, and mentors can support them in their learning.

LPLC’s evaluation team currently includes three clinical psychologists and a school psychologist who work with clients aged 5 to adult. LPLC’s evaluations define the individual’s learning profile – how self-regulation and information processing abilities impact academic performance. Self-regulation includes the social, emotional, attentional, and behavioral factors that impact daily functioning at school, at home, or in the workplace. Information processing refers to how the individual takes in, thinks about, stores, and retrieves information. Most evaluations include a deep dive into academic skills, including the basic and more advanced aspects of reading, writing, and math. The test results lead to recommendations of how to leverage the individual’s strengths to support areas of need.

According to Anne, “Evaluations at LPLC can be helpful across the lifespan – everything from determining kindergarten readiness; to diagnosing school-age attention and learning disabilities; to helping overwhelmed teens understand what will help; to documenting the need for accommodations in college or the workplace.” Providing a specific diagnosis related to learning, attention, and/or emotional needs is often part of an evaluation, but more importantly, clients leave with validation of their strengths and recommendations for strategies and intervention that will help improve their learning and their lives.

Counseling Corner: Evaluation

As humans, we have our own strengths, struggles, and unique ways of learning. Our view of the world stems from personal experiences (past and present), environment (home, school, work), relationships (friends, family, mentors), and how we interpret those experiences. We prefer our world to make sense, and each experience has impacted and molded us into who we are today. In counseling, it is important to see an individual as a whole person, and to understand not just what clients are feeling, but how they think and process information.

Sometimes, a therapist may recommend scheduling and completing a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation to help build this understanding. The information gathered from an evaluation can bring light to an individual’s functioning that may not have been explored otherwise. The combination of the two services can help guide the therapy process and better target effective treatment techniques, which in turn, can enhance personal growth and skill-building.
