HB 1176 - Signed by Governor
LSAW President Kate Schalk, LSAW Past President Pat Beehler; and Board of Registration Member Aaron Blaisdell were present for the signing of HB 1176
On May 21, 2019 Governor Jay Inslee signed  HB 1176  into law. It allows the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors to become an independent Washington State agency. LSAW supported this bill and launched a grass roots effort to help get the bill signed into law.
Certified Floodplain Surveyor Program
This certification program educates surveyors on the forms and processes associated with floodplain properties and the submital of Elevation Certificates. To become CFS certified, licensed surveyors must successfully complete the three-day certification seminar and exam. The specific topics covered in the course are: National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), FIRM Maps, NFIP Regulations and Elevation Certificates, Letters of Map Correction and Letters of Map Correction Processing. The certification is currently being offered in Tennessee and North Carolina. NSPS has requested each state association to determine interest in their state for expanding the program.  Please take a moment to complete this survey to help us determine if LSAW should implement the program.

In May members of the Lower Columbia Chapter participated in the first ever Surveyor’s Day held here at Skyview High School in Vancouver, WA. The event was well attended and received positive feedback. The chapter set up four stations which included demonstration on drones, total stations, and levels.

A survey was sent out to over 80 students who participated from three classrooms and 100% said they would recommend this event for next year and that it was a good use of their time. Prior to the event 65% of the students did not know what land surveying even was and 86% said they learned about new career possibilities by attending the event.

In April President Kate Schalk and Past Presidents Jon Warren and Pat Beehler represented LSAW at the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) spring meetings and lobby day.
There are changes being proposed to RCW 58.20 in order to address the 2022 Datum.
For the last several years the Evergreen State Surveyor (ESS) has been published solely online. This year, the Board of Directors budgeted funds to bring the ESS back to you mailbox and the first issue has now been published! Watch your mailbox for a copy of the ESS and get a sneak peak of this issue or review archived issues on the LSAW website.
