HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BOARD

The LSAW Board of Directors met via Zoom Video Teleconference on Tuesday August 16, 2022.

 

  • The Fall Workshop will be held on Friday November 4, 2022 at Renton Technical College in conjunction with the Fall board meeting on November 5th. The workshop will include an all-day CFedS program by Tasha Huhta and Glen Thurow as well as 2 half-day sessions for Survey Technicians. 


  • All past issues of the Evergreen State Surveyor have been scanned as searchable PDFs and are available on the LSAW website.


  • The 2022 Walker Cup was held on Friday August 12th and was very successful.


  • A Celebration of Life was held for Jim Coan on August 13th at Renton Tech. Jim’s Final Point Monument was also set at Renton Tech.


  • The Board voted to donate $1,000 to NSPS in Jim Coan’s name to help offset the PAC Golf Tournament expenses.


  • Final dues notices have been sent and unpaid dues lists were sent out to chapter leaders.


  • Several revisions to the LSAW Award Guidelines were approved. The biggest changes include renaming the Surveyor and Associate of the Year to Outstanding Surveyor and Outstanding Associate


  • LSAW will be looking for a Monument Preservation Bill sponsor in order to reintroduce the bill in 2023; it will no longer be going through as an agency request by DNR.


  • Future Meeting Dates:

  • Friday, November 4, 2022 - Fall Seminar
  • Saturday, November 5, 2022 – Board of Directors Meeting
  • February 15-17, 2023 - Conference at the Grand Davenport in Spokane


  • LSAW will have 500 outreach posters printed and available for distribution


  • LSAW members are encouraged to check out Mentoring Mondays, a free weekly virtual discussion group for the profession.


  • Help build the 2022 Transformation Tool, get out, and collect GPS on benchmarks. Tom Barger is coordinating this effort for Washington State. Deadline is December 2022.

Survey Laws, the PLSO, and You

Speakers: David Icenhower, PLS; Ann Alves, LSIT; Dennis Studeman, PLS

Through explanation and discussion of RCW 58.09, WAC 332-120, WAC 332-130, and other pertinent survey-related laws, this presentation will highlight some of the standards that all surveyors are required to meet. The concept of professionalism will guide a discussion on the application of these laws. This presentation will also showcase how the Public Land Survey Office (PLSO), within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is an indispensable resource for land surveyors.

This course is designed to show you how to prepare for the FAA Part 107 Unmanned Aircraft General exam. Certified Federal Surveyor Program Standards of Practice

Speakers: Glen Thurow, PLS, CFedS Program Manager &

Tasha Huhta, CFedS Training Coordinator

The CFedS Standards of Practice provide the operational requirements for CFedS in both Federal and State Authority surveys. In addition to the standards, an in-depth review of the CFeds Program Handbook will also be covered. Current CFedS who attend and pass a related quiz will receive one continuing education credit. This presentation will also interest those individuals who contemplate becoming CFedS in the future and wish to improve their professional credentials.

Advanced Record Research for the PLSS

Speaker: Robert Femling & Washington/Oregon BLM Cadastral Office Staff

This presentation will provide an in-depth review of proper record research as part of the evidence collection process in making field boundary determinations when surveying in the PLSS. This record research includes consideration of corner records, Master Title Plats, Supplemental Survey Plats, field notes, Land Patents, Control Document Index, and other public and private Land Status Records. CFedS who attend and pass a related quiz will receive one continuing education credit.

CFedS Credit Available!


This course qualifies for 2 CFedS credit hours. For those requiring CFedS credit, an additional $25 will be payable the day of the seminar.

Each webinar features an NGS employee delving into a topic of interest, and generally includes a moderated question and answer session. These webinars are geared toward geospatial professionals as well as educators/students of geodesy and remote sensing. 


Registration is free, webinars are streamed via GoToWebinar, and video recordings are made available for later viewing.
