This Week of Giving Thanks

As we reflect on this season of gratitude, we want to thank all of you who contribute to protecting Maine's lakes. Whether you are a dedicated volunteer, a generous supporter, or an advocate for our mission, we couldn't do this important work without you.

Looking ahead, we are excited to be building a full schedule of activities for the coming year. As we prepare for 2025, we hope you'll consider a donation to Lake Stewards of Maine!

We are incredibly grateful to a generous supporter who will match the first ten $1000 gifts. Your $1000 donation will be doubled in value and will make twice the impact on sustaining and expanding our citizen science programs!

❄️Help Track Ice Cover

on Maine Lakes! ❄️

Have you noticed ice forming around your lake? That’s great news! Ice cover is a critical indicator of lake health and the climate. By submitting your observations, you can contribute to vital lake science and help preserve Maine’s ecological and cultural heritage.

Why We Track Ice 🧊

Ice data acts as a proxy for the temperature of a lake. A large reservoir of cold water ensures that the cold water fish like landlocked salmon and arctic char and trout are able to survive. Every observation provides us with a better understanding of how Maine's lakes are doing and what we can do to protect the future of them.

Submit Your Observations 📷

  • Ice-In Data Submission Form: No certification is required, and you don’t have to live on a lake to participate—anyone can help!
  • Learn More: Visit our ice-tracking page to explore methods, history, and the importance of this data.

Volunteer Community

This week's community update

The NALMS 2024 Conference celebrated the incredible contributions of citizen scientists, and the Lake Stewards of Maine (LSM) volunteer community shone brightly. Your hard work and dedication were highlighted in discussions on cyanobacteria ecology and monitoring efforts like BloomWatch, and identifying long-term trends in lake health.

It’s clear that volunteer-generated data is essential for addressing today’s environmental challenges. Seeing the impact of efforts like yours—from Maine to California, Canada, and beyond—was inspiring and reinforced how the LSM community is leading the way in advancing lake science.Thank you for being part of this amazing community. Together, we’re shaping the future of lake stewardship and creating a lasting legacy for Maine’s lakes!
