March 2025

Dear Melina,

As the region welcomes spring, I am reflecting on the resilience and strength of our community.

The past two months have brought unforeseen challenges to hundreds of our new neighbors and our organization. The termination of federally funded programs left recently resettled refugees, including Afghan allies, at risk of food insecurity and homelessness. Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) was left scrambling to fill the gap while facing a cash flow crisis created by frozen federal funds.

This week, the federal government released partial reimbursement for the nearly $4 million owed to LSSNCA. Please read our statement on our website.

While this is a step toward stabilizing LSSNCA’s operations, the attacks on the programs that welcome and support families and individuals fleeing persecution continue, leaving many in precarious situations.

During this time of crisis, community members like you and congregations are stepping up to support our new neighbors and advocate against harmful policies.

Together, we are answering the call to welcome the newcomer.

I am so profoundly grateful for your ongoing support, which allows LSSNCA to continue to provide critical services to our new neighbors.

With gratitude,

CEO, LSSNCA

Rahmati and his family, including two young children, resettled in the region last November with the support of LSSNCA. Now, they are one of the hundreds of new neighbors impacted by the administration's termination of essential services. Marjila, a former journalist and refugee, was among the team members that LSSNCA was forced to lay off after the January stop work order. Rahmati’s and Marjila’s stories are featured in a recent Associated Press story on the human impact of the administration’s action.

Highlights

Over the weekend, sixty-three refugee families across Maryland and Virginia received a delivered, catered Iftar – the meal that breaks the fast during Ramadan. We are grateful to Maliha Cheema for organizing and fundraising this event and to the LSSNCA staff and volunteers for delivering meals.

This month, we commemorate the 45th anniversary of the bipartisan Refugee Act of 1980, which enshrined our commitment to welcoming and supporting people fleeing persecution into law. This legacy is now being dismantled.

A ban on refugees remains in place, and programs that provide refugees essential services – like food, housing, and wellness – are being reduced or terminated completely.

We need you to take action.

  1. Contact your members of Congress to urge them to demand that the administration lift the refugee ban.
  2. Register to participate in RCUSA’s Advocacy Days in June to build Congressional support for humanitarian programs.
  3. Donate to provide newly arrived refugee families with housing, job training, and essentials as they rebuild their lives.
