Immigration Clinic students honored with Human Rights Award after string of recent successes

The LSU Immigration Law Clinic and its students were recognized with the Human Rights Award by the Atlas Foundation for their work promoting and preserving the human rights of vulnerable and persecuted people.

This award follows a string of successful immigration cases that were represented by Clinic students, including legal permanent residence granted to a family of four asylees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, special juvenile status granted to a 17-year-old from Honduras, and asylum granted to a 35-year-old Turkish Client.

LSU Law Clinic celebrates a decade of learning through practice
The LSU Law Clinic held its first class in the 2008-09 academic year before officially opening its doors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 21, 2009. This year, the Clinic celebrates its 10th anniversary and marks a decade of legal learning through practice.

Sen. Bill Cassidy visits LSU Law for talk on issues facing military veterans
United States Senator Bill Cassidy visited the LSU Law Center on Nov. 9 and spoke of issues veterans face as they transition back to the civilian role. Cassidy, a member of the U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, was a guest of the LSU Law Veterans Advocacy Club, an organization of LSU Law students advocating for veterans and their families.

ABA Negotiation and National Moot Court teams bring back multiple awards
Three LSU Law traveling moot court and trial advocacy teams brought back a number of awards and honors from their competitions in early November. The Tom Fore Phillips National Moot Court team won First Place Best Brief in the region and placed as semifinalists. Also, LSU Law’s brand-new-this-year ABA Negotiation Competition Purple team placed as semifinalists, and the Gold team placed sixth.

In Elysha Spriggins’s eyes, law can be used as a means to leave an impression on the world, and that is what has inspired her to take on law school. Her time at LSU has been nothing short of successful as she finished her past semester in the top 25 percent of her class. She is a member of the Board of Advocates and served as a member of the LSU Law ABA Arbitration Team in 2017.

With the help of the Dean's Scholarship to alleviate some of the financial burden of law school, Elysha can focus on her goal of becoming an LSU Law graduate and her plans to change the world.
