From the Director: Sue Bennett, LT'94
Dear LT Community:

In the last two months, LT hosted our two biggest events of the year: The LT’22 Graduation & Alumni Reunion, and our first-ever all-day Alumni Retreat on Racial Equity. I hope you will read about them below, especially the reflections and testimonials from attendees.

Both gatherings highlighted for me, once again, the sustaining power of community. It is in relationship with each other that we find both the courage to tackle hard things and the nourishment to keep going. As Adrienne Maree Brown writes: “We need movements rooted in love right now, movements powered not by difference and exclusion and punishment, but by common ground, compassion, humility, healthy boundaries, patience, and healing.” These are the characteristics of the LT community and the relationships we nurture.

As we look to next year, our focus will be on ensuring organizational alignment with our newly articulated vision, mission, and values statements. As you reflect on these statements, I’d love to hear your ideas for how LT can continue to serve our region.

In Community,
Sue Bennett, LT'94, Executive Director
LT'22 Graduation & Alumni Reunion Highlights
On June 16, 2022, we celebrated the LT’22 cohort and welcomed them into our alumni community at the LT’22 Graduation & Alumni Reunion. It was an inspiring, uplifting evening, and the joy of being together was palpable. If you were unable to attend, check out our blog post, which has photos and the link to the event recording. Here's what a few LT'22 class members said they are taking away from their LT experiences.
“Leadership Tomorrow taught me to welcome uncomfortable conversations. To be brave and willing to be wrong. Learning and growing from these conversations while centering the voices of those with lived experience is crucial to promoting antiracist structural changes in our community."
- Greg Wilson, Pugh Capital Management
"Leadership Tomorrow has spotlighted the many facets of the most complex challenges we face in the Puget Sound Region. While that can be daunting, I am inspired by the diversity of skills, experiences, and perspectives of my LT colleagues and hopeful that a collaborative approach to co-creating solutions and garnering resources – will be effective. Most important will be to include both the expected – and especially the unexpected – stakeholders."
- Kimberly Miyazawa Frank, Cambia Health Solutions
“Through Leadership Tomorrow, I’ve met so many thoughtful people who are not only dedicated to making our region a better place, but also dedicated to expanding our thinking about how we get there. LT has given me space to think about how I show up as a leader, how I connect with others, and how to work through things that are uncomfortable.”
- Alicia Teel, Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce
LT Alumni Racial Equity Retreat Highlights
On May 20, 2022 at Bethaday Community Learning Center, LT held its first full-day alumni retreat focused on racial equity. The event was designed to meet alumni at their wide range of learning edges – from those who have tremendous experience and expertise to those who are just starting this work. Alumni who participated in the retreat spanned the decades, with graduates from 1989 to 2021!

Here's what two alumni said about their experiences at the retreat and what motivated them to participate. See additional testimonials here.
“I heard a theme today. We are all looking for community. We all recognize the need to lean on one another, collaborate more effectively, and not work in silos. We need partnership and community to get this work done."
-Nykeesha Griffin, LT’20, Microsoft
“As a white man, I want to be part of disrupting racism. Talking to other white people in caucus settings is crucial. To use my white privilege as a force for good, I need to use my voice and ears to show up, learn, and grow.”
- Ben Johns, LT'17, Treehouse

Leaders on Board Newsletter
Interested in board service? Check out LT's latest Leaders on Board newsletter, which features 32 nonprofits that are looking for leaders to join their boards of directors.
Anjali Bhagat, LT'06, recently joined the board of Team Read after seeing the announcement in our last newsletter. Here's what motivated Anjali to join the board:

"As I was looking to engage more deeply in the nonprofit community, Sue suggested I review the latest LT Leaders on Board Newsletter. Through the newsletter, I learned about so many incredible nonprofits making a significant impact in our community. For me personally, Team Read’s mission, vision, and goals deeply resonated with me, as all children deserve to be great readers. The innovative dual-impact model Team Read created not only helps young students become confident readers but also trains teens within the community to be tutors. After speaking with the Executive Director, several board members, and attending a Board meeting; I knew this would be a great fit. I am thrilled to be joining the Board and look forward to continuing my learning while contributing towards reaching Team Read’s mission, vision and goals."
