LUM Experiences Poverty Through Simulation

Event Offers Powerful Insights into Daily Struggles

Earlier this week, LUM staff, board members, and volunteers (pictured above) joined Food Finders Food Bank staff to participate in the United Way Poverty Simulation, an eye-opening experience that deepened their understanding of the challenges faced by low-income families.

This immersive exercise placed participants in real-life scenarios, forcing them to navigate housing instability, food insecurity, and financial hardship within a limited timeframe. Many left the simulation feeling the weight of frustration, anxiety, and despair that so many in our community experience daily. The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of the LUM mission and strengthened our commitment to serving those in need.

LUM is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Food Finders Food Bank and thanks United Way of Greater Lafayette for facilitating this impactful experience. Thank you to Central Presbyterian Church for hosting the event. Together, we continue working toward a stronger, more compassionate community.

Eileen Weiss Honored as Woman of Wisdom

YWCA Recognizes Former LUM Finance Director

Last week, Eileen Hession Weiss was named the 2025 YWCA Woman of Wisdom at the Women of Vision event. Surrounded by family, LUM colleagues, and community members, she received an award and a proclamation from Indiana State Representative Sheila Klinker and delivered inspiring remarks.

Eileen’s impact on Lafayette Urban Ministry and the community is profound. As the former LUM business manager and finance director, she led key programs, including Jubilee Christmas, the Tax Assistance Program, and Hunger Hike. She also served as City Clerk and City Council member for the City of Lafayette, IN, advocating for inclusive policies and programs. {Pictured L to R: Lindsey Mickler, YWCA CEO & president, with Eileen Weiss.}

A mentor and champion for women’s leadership, Eileen has broken barriers in finance and politics.
