Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion born of the Jewish and Christian traditions. We keep our minds open to the religious questions people have struggled with in all times and places.

Lakeshore UU members and friends will once again collect and donate non-perishable foods to TREP (Two Rivers Economical pantry). Canned, in a jar or boxed food (NO fresh food items) will be accepted.  You’ll find a box in the front entryway of the Fellowship on the first and second Sunday of the month A member of the Adult Activates committee will deliver your donations to TREP. Thank you for your generosity.

The Manitowoc County Domestic Violence Center (D.B.A In-Courage) is a non-profit organization providing supportive responses to people in the Manitowoc County area who are experiencing violence in their lives

Join Progressive Lakeshore People and other social justice and faith based organizations for a "Week of Unity in our Community". Each day during the week, our community will be gathering together to acknowledge Mayor Nickels Proclamation of "Love not Hate" week.

Saturday,

9/12: In Washington Park on Saturday, September 12th, from

12:30pm to 2:30pm. Progressive Lakeshore People will kick off Love not Hate

week with a rally. Our rally will focus on supporting marginalized community

members of all identities and places of origin. We will have speakers, music,

colorful decorations, and celebratory stickers and buttons. Local supportive

groups and organizations have been invited to set up in the park to share

resources, knowledge, and supportive friendship with one another. We will welcome

organizations such as NAMI, PFLAG, Gracious Givers, and more. We hope to see

you there to celebrate the first annual Love not Hate week in Manitowoc! 

Thursday,

9/17:  The Parkview Playhouse will be showing a free film in honor

of Love not Hate week: TransMilitary (2018). Doors open at 6:00pm and the film will be

shown at 6:30pm. This award-winning documentary gives insight into what it's

like for transgender people to serve (or try to serve when denied an equal

right to serve) in the United States military. Although this film is free to

the public, donations will be accepted. Parkview Playhouse is located at 932 S

12th St, Manitowoc, WI 54220. 

Saturday,

9/19:  We will welcome the Unity Mobile to Manitowoc at 2:30 pm in

Washington Park. The Unity Mobile, positivity and community unity on wheels, is

visiting 50 Wisconsin communities, crisscrossing our state for the Fight For

Our Lives Democracy Tour. The bus is all about Peace, People, and Planet: a

nonpartisan project. While the bus travels, documentary filmmakers are

recording Wisconsin people in the communities they visit. We, Progressive

Lakeshore People, are doing Butterfly Builds to create many large colorful

butterflies to welcome the bus: a kaleidoscope of colorful and diverse

migrants. Everyone is invited to make and bring a butterfly, a sign, or a flag.

While nonpartisan, the bus organizers are encouraging everyone to register and

get out to vote in upcoming elections. 

A note on

butterfly builds: There are butterfly build events happening around the community. Watch the Progressive Lakeshore People’s website, progressivelakeshorepeople.org, for opportunities in the weeks before Love Not Hate week, or attend the Noon butterfly build at the Progressive Lakeshore People’s Parkview Playhouse at 932 S. 12Th St. on 9/19. Donations to help buy materials will be accepted.

Saturday, 9/19: A community potluck with the Unity Mobile folks will be

held at the Lakeshore United Methodist Church at 5:30pm. Everyone is welcome! Lakeshore United Methodist Church is located at 411 Reed Ave. in Manitowoc. 

Although Love Not Hate week was created by the Progressive Lakeshore People, and especially the LGBTQ and Allies committee of PLP, we are pleased that our city has embraced the idea and we want to make this a city wide effort to bring more love and positivity to Manitowoc. All peace loving people who want to stand up against discrimination are welcomed. 

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to honor the strength of survivors, remember those impacted by domestic violence, and raise awareness in our community.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH - Kim Everett

Tahdig Recipe (Crispy Persian Rice)

Tahdig, pronounced tah-deeg, literally means "bottom of the pot" in Persian. And it refers to a beautiful, pan-fried Persian rice that is fluffy and buttery on the inside with a perfectly golden crust, which is the layer at the bottom of the pot. This tahdig is laced with saffron and scented with orange zest. Be sure to use a nonstick pan for this recipe. Step-by-step photos and more tips in the post.

Servings: 8

Ingredients

• 1 tsp saffron threads

• 2 cups basmati rice like

• 1 to 2 tbsp Kosher salt

• 2 tbsp whole milk plain yogurt

• 2 tbsp grape seed oil, or any healthy neutral-tasting oil of your choice

• 1 cup dried cherries, finely chopped

• Grated zest of 1 orange

• 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 4 to 8 tbsp unsalted butter, cubed (see note #1)

• 3 tbsp pistachios, roughly chopped for garnish

Directions

• Mix the saffron into 1 cup very warm (but not hot) water. Let sit for at least 10 minutes to let the saffron release all of its flavor.
• In a sieve, rinse the rice under cool running water until the water almost runs clear.
• In a large pot, combine 8 cups of water and the salt (this is your one shot to season the rice itself). Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the rice and cook until al dente, 5 to 6 minutes. Drain the rice.
• In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of the cooked rice, the yogurt, grapeseed oil, and 2 tbsp of the saffron water. Mix thoroughly.
• 
  
• Spread the rice-yogurt mixture evenly on the bottom of a 10-inch lidded nonstick pot. Sprinkle 1 cup of the remaining cooked rice on top, followed by 2 tablespoons of the dried cherries, a pinch of orange zest, and a pinch of cinnamon. Add another layer of rice and repeat with the cherries, orange zest, and cinnamon, reserving a couple tbsp of the cherries for garnish. As you go about layering, the rice will start to dome and look "pointy" in the middle--that's okay! Keep it that way. Finish by dotting the top with the butter and pour the rest of the saffron water all over the top.
• Wrap the lid in a kitchen towel and secure it around the handle with a rubber band. Cover the pot and cook over low heat, 25 to 30 minutes or until the rice around the edges is golden and crispy; it's okay to peek under the lid! (See note #2) Be sure not to burn the bottom layer of the rice, though you do want a nice crust in the bottom.
• Remove the lid, invert a large serving plate over the pot, and carefully flip them over together. No worries if it sticks, just scrape it out and run with it! Sprinkle the tahdig with the reserved dried cherries and pistachios and serve right away.

• Note #1--butter amount: The original recipe indicates 8 tablespoons (or 1 stick) unsalted butter. For me, 4 to 5 tablespoons were sufficient. 
• Note #2--how long until the bottom layer of rice crisps will vary. My rice took 50 minutes for the bottom layer to crisp, and I did adjust the heat later to medium-low. It's important to keep an eye on the rice and peek under the lid occasionally to make sure the bottom crisps but does not burn.
