During the City Council meeting held Monday, October 3, Mayor Riley presented a Proclamation to Courtney Schermerhorn of NISD in recognition of World Teacher's Day.

Way to go LVFD!!!

Wow Did You SEE....

Thank you to all of the volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who worked on the demolition and replacement of the Stirrup Ln. pedestrian bridge. The final project looks great and we appreciate the hard work the volunteers provided on the project for two hot Saturdays in a row. Everyone did an amazing job, and pedestrians from nearby neighborhoods are able to use the bridge to access the City Library, Conference and Community Centers, and Raymond Rimkus Park.

Looking for Energy Savings and Tips?

Click on the link below to see some great information from CPS Energy on how you can have your home save you some money$$!

Taking simple actions like these during hot summer weather helps conserve energy and saves you money on your utility bill:
  1. Set your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher. Bump it up a little more if you are leaving home. Familiarize yourself with the 20 degree differential between outside and inside temperature. Maintain your air conditioning unit with seasonal tune ups and change filters monthly during the hot summer months.
  2. Use fans & point them in your direction to feel 4-6 degrees cooler. Set ceiling fans to run counter-clockwise.
  3. Lower window shades and blinds when they are in direct sunlight.
  4. Avoid using large appliances like an oven and clothes dryer. Grill & line dry when you can.
  5. Unplug appliances and electronics when you are not using them. When the wire is connected to the outlet it consumes energy, even if the appliance or device is turned off.

School Bus Safety

It's that time school is starting up so don't be this driver! Use caution around school zones and around school busses!
If you are driving, remember these simple rules:

Yellow flashing lights on a school bus mean slow down — don’t speed up — because the bus is preparing to stop. There are likely students waiting to get on the bus or parents waiting nearby to pick up children.

Red flashing lights mean stop — and wait at least 20 feet behind the bus — because children are getting on or off the school bus. Stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.

Even when lights aren’t flashing, watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone or bus stop.

Parents - talk bus safety with your children:
Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.

Teach them to play it SAFE:

S - Stay five steps away from the curb.

A - Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.

F - Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.

E - Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.

Ultimately, the members of the Leon Valley Police Department want drivers to be aware of school zones, stay alert, and keep our children safe.
