LWV OPRF December 9 Week in Preview

Last minute invite!

The League of Women Voters is joining a rally in Washington DC on Tuesday, December 10 for a show of strength and numbers in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. December 10 is the 101st anniversary of the ERA being introduced to Congress.

The League of Women Voters of Illinois is sponsoring a bus to Washington DC—join us on the road! The bus will depart from a suburban location (likely a shopping mall tbd) the evening of December 9 so that we make it in time for the Relay4Rights rally on December 10. We will return to Chicago that same night, arriving home early on December 11. We expect the cost to be no more than $150 per person. If you are interested in joining our charter (or want to drive and caravan with the bus) please let us know ASAP by completing this form. Seats will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis.

Strengthen our Firearm Policy!

LWV IL is seeking to update our Firearm Policy Position so we have needed advocacy tools. LWV OPRF helped with editing the set of questions for a consensus study.  It's time for the our League now to take the next step toward policy approvals. Twenty-five firearm policy questions are ready for our League to study. Each question is presented with supporting evidence and requires a sound argument for positive or negative response.

If you are interested in participating in this study, you will be asked to examine one or more questions, to review the pros and cons as presented, and then respond whether the pro/con arguments are sufficient.

December's goal is to have a volunteer assigned to each question. January's goal is to study the pros & cons for each question. February's goal is for LWV OPRF to strive for consensus with local league Zoom meetings for consensus agreement on each question. This will probably take three Zoom meetings, one for each of the topical areas. Please contact Lois Thiessen Love to participate in this next step.

Peace Vigil

A candlelight peace vigil to end gun violence will be held this Tuesday, December 10, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 545 S. East Ave, Oak Park, at 6:00pm. The vigil is sponsored by several local groups including Moms Demand Action Oak Park-Austin Area, Community of Congregations, and Catholic Parishes of Oak Park. For more information, click here.
