LWV OPRF November 11 Week in Preview

Coffee and Conversation

The election is over and the results are in. How will we react and treat one another in victory and defeat? How will we handle different feelings and perspectives about the election without succumbing to stereotyping, dismissing, ridiculing and contempt towards millions of people of think and vote the other way, including some of our family and friends? If the election went your way, avoid superiority and gloating. If the election did not go your way, accept defeat. Avoid bitterness for those that voted the other way.

Join us on November 14 at 9:30am at the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association with Chuck Stone of Braver Angels, who will lead a discussion on how to lessen the effects of polarization when we encounter it in political discussions. This conversation will focus on how we regard and talk about large groups of ordinary people on the other side of the political aisle.

Bring a family member or friend with you.

Mock Election

Julian Middle School once again held a mock election with their students. Librarian Jamie Winchell put together a voter's guide, trained student volunteers to be poll workers, had a contest for "I Voted" stickers, and compiled the results. Our League supplied the Pollstar booths from the Cook County Clerk's Office. During the week of October 28, they had a 83% turnout of students to vote for President, U.S. 7th District, Illinois House 78th district, and the referendum on Ranked Choice Voting. You can see the pictures of the event and the results here.

Referendum Results

Oak Park voters passed the binding referendum question for choosing the President and Trustees by using Ranked Choice Voting in the 2027 election. Results were 79.2% voting in favor with about 8% of voters leaving it blank. Now the work begins to educate our entire community in how this will work.

Also in this election, voters in Oak Park showed overwhelming support for ending gerrymandering in Illinois. In both Oak Park and Maywood Townships, voters weighed in on a non-binding referendum question that asked whether or not they wanted an independent redistricting commission to draw legislative and congressional maps. In Oak Park, 81% of voters said yes to Fair Maps. CHANGE Illinois and our League will continue to work to end gerrymandering and empower residents across the state to show their unified support for Fair Maps.
