August 2020
President's Letter
Dear Members,
Hopefully this has been a safe summer for you and your families thus far. August starts the beginning of what will be a busy fall for our League. We, as a group, have done a good job so far in adhering to the rules to keep the COVID-19 virus at bay. This virus is going to be with us for a while, so we must make mask wearing, social distancing, and frequent hand washing a part of our everyday lives in order to bring infection rates back down.

Though we may still be doing many events virtually, an election year is where Leagues around the country gear up to help inform members and our communities on voting. This year will be especially challenging with mail-in voting option education, challenges to the provision of education, and Fair Tax referendum lobbying.

The LWV IL Criminal Justice Committee continues to virtually work on the analysis of the information gathered by the original study group.  That being said, we are still seeking more members to participate in this important study in order to update the LWV IL position on Criminal Justice.

We want to thank Johan Walsh for her dedicated work as Board Secretary for the past few years. With
her stepping down, we are in need of a member to take minutes for the monthly second Tuesday Executive and fourth Tuesday Board Meetings. Since these meetings will be virtual for at least the next few months, this work can be done from your home.  Also note that since the meetings will be recorded, minutes can be taken after the fact if needed.

Finally, we are seeking a co-chair for the Drinks and Dialogue Committee. Because these meetings will be on Zoom for the foreseeable future, the position would only entail finding guest speakers. A familiarity with the community would be helpful.

Please contact me if you can help with any of these opportunities to get more involved with our League.
We are off and running!

Beverly Graham
LWV OPRF President
Membership
Our new fiscal year started on July 1st and membership renewals are now being accepted via our website or by mail. It only takes a minute to pay online. So far, about half of our members have renewed. Your continued membership is important to keeping our League strong. Have you renewed??
Galena Tour
On August 22 and 23rd,  the Galena/Jo Daviess Historical Society will be guiding a tour of "socially distanced, masked" guests in groups of ten through a remarkable 80 years of the  " fight for equality, justice, and the vote" for women as told by local actresses.  They will be telling the stories of four remarkable women: Adele Washburne and Clara McClellan, abolitionists and women's rights advocates, and Susan B. Anthony and Jane Addams who had ties to Galena.
The event will also tell the story of the founding of the League of Women Voters and the important and unique role Jane Addams played in it.  LWV Jo Davies County will be on hand distributing Fair Tax info,  Illinois Voter Guide palm cards,  membership brochures, and Fair Tax literature.  You can buy your timed ticket to the event here. Watch a short promo video for the event here
Oak Park Walking Tour
The Oak Park River Forest Historical Society will be leading a Women's History Walking Tour on Saturday, August 15, from 10:00-11:30am. Starting at the Oak Park Library on Lake Street, the guides will share stories about Grace Wilbur Trout, Lillie Pitkin, Augusta Jane Chapin, and other local suffrage leaders. Groups will be kept to only ten participants with masks mandatory. Go here to purchase tickets from the Historical Society.
Deputy Registrar Training
In this time of social distancing, in person voter registration is......challenging. If you are already a Deputy Registrar, you know that registering someone to vote is a satisfying task and one that is one of the most important things we Leaguers can do. But with in person training also put on hold right now, the Cook County Clerk's Office has stepped up to the challenge and made it possible for someone to still be trained as a Deputy Registrar online. First, you will need to send your name and address to Peggy Kell, LWV OPRF Voter Service Chair. Then you can go online to watch a video with all the training information. After watching the video and taking the oath, the Clerk's Office will send you a card with a Registrar number. You can read about this process here. Take advantage of this opportunity! Please contact Peggy Kell with any questions.
Voter Service Update
Though we have been largely staying at home, members of your Voter Service Committee also got outside for distribution of door hangers with mail-in voting information. These were placed on the door knobs of seniors in Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, and Elmwood Park. How did we know there was a graduate in the house? Well, the houses were marked with those yard signs, making them easy to identify. Thanks to Jane Hastings, Wendy Greenhouse, Elan Long, Kathy Balk, Marge Massarello, Margaret Prechel, Ed McDevitt, and Peggy Kell for getting more than 225 items delivered. And thanks to new LaGrange Area Leaguer, Kerry Lipitz, for coming up with this timely idea. There was a QR Code on the hanger that could be scanned to send them to the online mail-in ballot application. Brilliant!
Weekly Communications
Starting with this August newsletter, you should be receiving a weekly LWV OPRF communication every Monday at 11:00am. The first Monday of the month will be the newsletter and the subsequent Mondays will be the Week in Preview. If any committee chairs have information on upcoming meetings or calendar items to share, please get it to Peggy Kell by Friday at 6:00pm. The communiques are put together over the weekend. If you don't receive the 11:00am emails, please first check your spam or junk folder. Sometimes your email account will not recognize our address. Please introduce them by putting our email address, [email protected], in your address book. If you still are not receiving them, please contact Peggy Kell.  And remember, our newsletters and all Week in Previews are posted on the newsletter page of our website.
News to Use
Once or twice a month we share links to our sister Leagues' updates. Sometimes you receive emails from say LWV US or Cook County directly and sometimes emails are sent to our website administrator who then is supposed to share them with members. We don't want to overwhelm you with emails, we just want to keep you informed.
