President's Letter
Dear Leaguers,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 League year. I look forward to seeing many of you at our League events and participating in our committees. The committee chairs met over the summer to discuss plans for the new year. The League is at its best when members actively support the many opportunities we have to make a positive impact in our communities. I hope you are ready to take an active role by responding to League alerts for engagement and participating in the League's programs. Our committees are looking for new members and fresh ideas.

There are three issues I would like you to act upon now:
First, write a letter to William J. Gicker, Manager of Stamp Development, Stamp Services. His Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee is considering issuing   a commemorative stamp honoring the ratification of the 19th Amendment. I have attached a sample letter that you may use to contact him. Please add your contact information.

Second, HR 5308 recommends a 19th Amendment series of coins starting in 2021. There would be 50 new quarters recognizing a significant woman from each state. Please contact your representative to add his or her name as sponsor of this bill.

Third, HR 19 calls for a Smithsonian Women's History Museum on the Mall in Washington D.C. Ask your representative to add his or her name as sponsor of this bill.

Since these are Federal Bills please pass on the information to friends and relatives from around Illinois and across the nation. The more  "stamp" letters and sponsors of the bills the better chance of passing. These need approval during this session of Congress.

Save the Date - mark your calendars! Second Tuesday and Drinks and Dialogue have set Monday, September 17th, from 7:00-8:30 at the Oak Park Main Library Veteran's Room for our Fall Kickoff. The theme is "Today's Threat to Voter Rights: What's at Stake?" with speakers from various organizations. Voter registration to patrons of the library will also be available that evening.

Our mission is to educate and advocate, so let's get out there and do it together!  If you have any questions, concerns, great ideas, please contact me. If I cannot help you I will put you in contact with someone who can help you.

Here's to a successful year,

Marge Massarello
Membership Dues
At the May Annual Meeting, members voted on the proposal to increase dues to $70, which will now be tax deductible. You should have received a renewal letter in the mail last month. Please either mail your check or pay online. On our website, you can renew your membership with a credit card.  Your membership and participation keep our League vital. We use the information from your renewal to put together our directory. To be included, don't delay in sending in your dues today!
Fall Kickoff
On Wednesday, September 19, two of our event committees, Second Tuesday and Drinks & Dialogue, will kickoff their year by co-sponsoring, "Today's Threat to Voter Rights: What's at Stake?" This will be a panel discussion with speakers from various organizations. Scheduled from 7:00-8:30 pm, mark your calendars now for this informative evening.
Good Earth Fundraiser
Our May Good Earth Shop and Share Day netted $95 for our League. Thanks to all members who beautified their gardens and helped increase our coffers!
Kudos to  Beverly Graham for once again putting this together.
Knowledge is Power!
In the weeks ahead, the Week in Preview, which comes out every Monday at 11:00 am, will share information about each of our committees. New members in particular may be unaware who is the chair, how often they meet, or what time commitment joining would involve. This information could also be a helpful refresher for our long time members. Keep your eye peeled for these columns. And remember, our WIP and monthly newsletter are also posted on our website. No excuse for not getting the information!!
Food for Thought
On Monday, July 16, Cook County Clerk David Orr was the speaker for the LWV Cook County Food for Thought Luncheon. After a distinguished career as Clerk, Mr. Orr has decided not to set reelection. If you were not able to attend, you can read about his remarks   here.
