LWV OPRF May 9 Week in Preview

Final Second Tuesday

Tomorrow! The Second Tuesday Committee invites you to join us tomorrow, May 10, 9:30am, for our final Zoom meeting of the 2021-2022 season: "Looking Back, Looking Ahead." We will review the topics that were presented and very much want your feedback. Which presentation(s) had the biggest impact? Which did not? Just as important: Which topics would you like to see discussed in the future? Please join us and let us know what you think by registering for the meeting here.

Congressional District 7 Forum

If you missed the Wednesday, May 4th, 7th Illinois Congressional District Democratic Primary Candidate Forum sponsored by LWVs of La Grange Area, OPRF, and Chicago, you can watch the video here. The three candidates, Kina Collins, Danny Davis, and Denarvis Mendenhall, answered questions from LWV moderator Barbara Yong on a wide range of topics. There will be another candidate forum for these same candidates sponsored by Indivisible Oak Park on Monday, May 23, 6:00pm, at Maze Branch Library, 845 Gunderson, Oak Park. This will be in person, with a live stream option (once registration details are confirmed.)

Planned Parenthood of Illinois will be sponsoring a rally for Abortion Justice on Saturday, May 14, at 10:30am in downtown Chicago. Go here to find the exact location after Wednesday.

Forest Preserve Walks

LWV OPRF is a supporter of the Cook County Forest Preserve VOTE YES referendum coming up on the November ballot. Voters will have the opportunity to vote YES to protect clean water sources, air quality, and wildlife in Cook County. A property tax increase of 0.025% (less than $1.66/month for the vast majority of homeowners) will protect, restore, and expand the Cook County Forest Preserves. To help citizens become better acquainted with some of the area preserves, LWV Chicago is sponsoring naturalist-led walks in the woods of Chicago. Go here to check out the locations and dates of these walks. The May registration deadline has passed, but there will be more walks through September. These free walks are limited to 20 people, so register early!

Waxing Poetic

This month's Feminist Four from LWV Berkeley Heights, New Providence, & Summit, NJ, celebrates four women who used the poetic power of their prose to advance the feminist cause. Julia Ward Howe, Anne Spencer, Marie Ponsot, and Megan Falley are highlighted in this monthly newsletter.

National Popular Vote

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is launching a series of informational

webinars about the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact throughout the summer.

The first of this series is titled, “The National Popular Vote: What, Why and How?" It is an introductory look at this legislation and how it can improve our democracy. Join the League at 6:30pm on June 7 for this virtual event. The first webinar will feature Eileen Reavey, the National Grassroots Director of National Popular Vote. Eileen also co-founded the grassroots advocacy group campaigning for Oregon to pass the National Popular Vote bill in 2016.

For decades, the League of Women Voters has supported the direct popular vote method for electing the President and Vice President. And in 2010, the League adopted a position of support for the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) proposal.

For those who cannot make the live events in this series, the recordings will be posted to the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin's YouTube page  and website.
