May 2020
President's Letter
Dear League Members,

Since last month we have become accustomed to lifestyles very different from the ones we had lived since birth.  I often reflect upon what I would have thought had I been able to look into the future and observe everyone wearing masks and gloves, taking care not to get close to others, and disinfecting everything they touch.  But we adjust to what is necessary to stay healthy, and we will get through this.  A salute again to those on the front lines and the people they come home to after a day of exhausting and dangerous work, saving the lives of the sick.

Because it is the nature of Leaguers to be resilient, even a pandemic has not stopped us from continuing our important work.  Quite frankly, we haven't missed a beat!  We continue to do our legislative work, have meetings on Zoom, and support each other during these dark times.  We have even found a way to organize a Fundraising Plant Sale to lift everyone's spirits. This is what keeps us going!

May is the month of our Annual Meeting where we will review an important new LWV IL study in order to update our position on Criminal Justice Reform.  My committee members and I have been preparing for this for nearly three years.  It has been a major undertaking and will require even more work in order to make it happen, which is why we need you to assist in completing this important last step in the process.  We are reaching out to anyone who is interested in bringing the League up to date with the changing laws and procedures that will help to create a more equitable justice system.  I look forward to working with you.

Stay safe, and see you at the May 26 Annual Meeting.

Beverly Graham
President

Census 2020 Update
League members continue to work with each of the villages to strategize on how to keep the momentum going now that the official census date, April 1, has passed and while people are rightfully preoccupied by the pandemic.  While each village is doing something different, you can expect to see a flurry of activity in the next several months including reminder postcards, electronic billboards, calls/texts from village officials and a letter to the editor in local papers from President Beverly Graham highlighting the importance of the census.  Please share this link with family, friends and neighbors for simple, easy ways to respond.
So how are we doing as of April 30?
