Happy Fall, Leaguers!
I want to thank our Second Tuesday team, Glynne Gervais, Stephen Jordan, and Judith McDevitt and our Drinks and Dialogue team Leslie Lauderdale and Maureen McLachlan for organizing our fall Kickoff program, "Threats to Voter Rights: What's at Stake? A Community Forum." We heard from a group of outstanding, knowledgeable presenters. If you were unable to attend the event, a video will be available on Facebook and our webpage.
Our three Vice Presidents, Kathy Balk, Mary Haley, and Joan Petertil have started making plans for our biennial State of the Villages fundraiser. Please join the committee to help make this day a success. Check for information in the calendar.
We have 199 members of our League. Welcome to our new and returning members. I hope to see you at our events throughout the year and bring a friend.
The Oak Park Library and our League have purchased the film, Dark Money. The first showing is scheduled for Monday, October 29, at 7:00 in the Veterans' room in the Main Library. I hope many of you will be able to attend.
There is important information from our Lake Michigan League I feel you should know. The LWV-Wisconsin joined the Midwest Environmental Advocates lawsuit against the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for plans to divert Lake Michigan waters for private Foxconn industrial project. Foxconn wants to divert 5-7 million gallons from Lake Michigan every day in violation of the core provision of the international compact. (Eight States and two Canadian Provinces) Lake Michigan water may only be withdrawn by communities solely for public water supply purposes. This will have an impact on all of us around the Great Lakes.
Finally, the Village Managers Association has dissolved their organization. They voted, unanimously, to donate their remaining funds of $664.00 to our League in support of our mission. We are very grateful for their donation and it is a perfect beginning to our fundraising efforts this year.
Please check our calendar to be sure you don't miss any of our gatherings. Hope to see you at Grant Park on October 13 for the March to the Polls.
