September 2020
President's Letter
Dear League Members,

As summer comes to a close, we are gearing up for the November Election with lots of activity for Voter Services and the Fall Kickoff while using QR codes to get information out to the community. And as we celebrate our Centennial and the 100th Anniversary of Women's Right to Vote, it is only fitting that the first woman of color is running for Vice President.

As we begin our 2020-2021 year we are pleased to welcome the following new Officers:
Secretary:  Mary Ann Porucznik,
Treasurer: Pauline Koch (former President)
Vice President:  Michelle Fitz-Henry
Directors:  Julianne Bonwit, Judy Crown and Jane Hastings

We had our first Board Meeting on August 25. We discussed the November election, the 2020 Census, the Fair Tax Amendment, and the Criminal Justice Reform Study to update our outdated position. Committee members in the Reform Study Group include Marsha Borders, Judy Crown, Suzanne Davis, Mary Cay Murray, and Michelle Fitz-Henry and myself. We will meet frequently to come to agreement on the 14 Points of Criminal Justice that the State Study Group prepared over the past three years.  On October 29, we will present the findings of the first half of the study to our full membership in preparation for our final consensus vote in January, 2021. Anyone who would like to join this dynamic group should contact me with any questions.  Use this link to read a brief overview of the study, which will help you to follow along when we meet in October.

Hope to see you all at the virtual LWV IL 100th Anniversary Commemorative Luncheon on September 24.

Fall Kickoff
Save the Date! Our Fall Kickoff Event is coming virtually on Wednesday, September 16, at 7:00pm. Reimagining Community Policing: Constructive Community Solutions will include LaDon Reynolds, Chief, Oak Park Police; Christian Harris, Business Owner and Director, Oak Park Library Board; Colleen Sutkus, Sarah's Inn, Forest Park; Anita Pindiur, Way Back Inn/Grateful House, Maywood, and Sharon Welch, League of Women Voters Chicago. Free and open to the public, invite your friends! Register for the event here.
Quick Response
The Voter Service Committee has been distributing flyers to area businesses. These flyers have a QR code that once scanned, can link a person to a website for online voter registration or a mail ballot request. What could be easier! There are still business areas that need to be covered. Can you help? Check out the list and see if you can add your name. Flyers can be picked up anytime from Peggy Kell's front porch. Want to share the flyers with an organization, church, or club you belong to? Download and print the English and Spanish versions and share away!
Election Judges
Get a backstage pass to history by becoming an Election Judge for the upcoming election. Training will be online to limit in person contact. And since November 3rd is a school holiday, high school juniors and seniors can apply to be an election judge. New Polling Place Technicians will be required to take in person training. Do you know of a high schooler or university student that would like to earn $200 for a day's work? Then share this flyer with them.
