Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24, at 6:30pm at the Main Oak Park Library, the LWV OPRF Fall Kick-off will discuss the implications of mis/dis-information. The panel will include the leaders of the LWVIL mis/dis task force. Joining them will be Michael Spikes, Ph.D., lecturer and director of Teach for Chicago Journalism at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. We are coming up on our final two weeks of in-person voter registration. Please check the list here for upcoming voter registration events. This Tuesday morning at the Oak Park Arms, we could use one more Deputy Registrar. Wednesday and Saturday, the Beyond Hunger Food Pantry needs just one person per day to register voters. We are almost done people. Please fill in the slots!

The LWV OPRF Centennial Gala is on October 20 at 5:30 pm at the 19th Century Club ballroom in Oak Park. All members should have received their invitation to the 100^th year event last week! We will take time to celebrate the League’s momentous centennial with cocktails, classical guitarist entertainment, program, slide show, and our League’s history exhibits. Join honorary co-chairs River Forest President Catherine Adduci, Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins, and Oak Park President Vicki Scaman as we celebrate 100 years of our League being a leader in registering voters, sponsoring candidate forums, advocating for issues such as increased early education and public school funding, and presenting workshops on critical civic issues. Stop in to see the displays on our League’s history at the Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park libraries and at the Oak Park River Forest Museum. The Forest Park library exhibit will be moved to the 19^th Century Club by October 10 for our Coffee and Conversation program and then will be up through October 20.

The LWV Lake Michigan Region Annual Meeting will take place October 25-27 in Manistee, MI. Both in-person and virtual options will be available to attend. All LWV OPRF members are also members of the LWV LMR. If anyone is interested in serving as a voting delegate, please contact Sarah Shirk. Registration information will be posted soon.

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court invoked the "major questions doctrine" in its landmark decision rejecting an EPA initiative to regulate greenhouse gases. The doctrine, which has evolved and gained prominence in recent years, describes the Court's demand that executive branch administrative agencies only address issues of “vast economic and political significance” if they have "clear" statutory authorization from Congress.

This Thursday, September 26, from Noon-1:15pm there will be a virtual program on "Civil Disagreements: Is the Major Questions Doctrine Sound Constitutional Interpretation?" Should the Supreme Court have the final word on "major questions''? And, if so, how does the Court distinguish between "major" and "minor" questions? Join Reform for Illinois for a lively discussion of some competing views and proposed answers to these and other questions. Register for this free program here.
