We have had a busy year and it will culminate with our Tuesday, May 23, Annual Meeting. As per the Bylaws, the packet of information for the business portion of the meeting will be sent out via email two weeks before the meeting. The meeting will be held at the Oak Park Township Senior Room, 130 S. Oak Park Ave., Oak Park, from 5:30-7:30 pm. Mark you calendars now!

This month, our Thursday, April 27 Drinks & Dialogue program will be hearing from
Lucia Whalen, Environmental Advocate and Climate Reality Leader. An update on the UIC Freshwater Lab May 10-11 "Untrouble the Waters" Summit will be discussed. The
location for Drinks & Dialogue is on the second floor of Skrine Chops House, 7230 W. Madison, Forest Park. Join us from 5:30-7:00pm. Free and open to public.

Chicago's Mayor (and just about everyone else) claims that Chicago is broke. The book, "
Chicago is Not Broke", a civic education project, refutes that claim. Its authors -- Tom Tresser, Hilary Denk and Amara Enyia, along with others -- show that far from being broke, Chicago has ample resources to become the city we all need and deserve. Join the conversation about this book this

Membership Committee Meeting

We are overjoyed to have so many new members join our League this year. Now we need to develop a plan on how to educate and keep these new members involved in the upcoming year. Feedback sheets were passed out to the audience at all the candidate forums we held in February and March. All respondents thought the forums were helpful while they learned about them in a variety of ways: social media, local paper, LWV website, or from a friend. The Voter Service Committee worked hard at each event to make it successful. Thanks to Judith McDevitt, Linda Valentine, Marsha Borders, Sarah Shirk, Kathy Perry, Kathy Balk, Mary Haley, Noel Dunn, Ann Marohn, Marge Massarello, Marissa Garza, Sandra Sokol, Roselen Murphy, Mary Cay Murray, Leigh Eicher, Sue Piha, Ameri Klafeta, Joan Fiscella, Beth Rooney, Beverly Graham, Ann Bolan, Dorothy Wilz, Marilyn Cantisano, and Peggy Kell.
And if you haven't seen them yet, there is still time to view the Candidate Forum videos before you vote on Tuesday, April 4. We have had a high of 597 views of the Oak Park SD#97 Forum to a low of 140 views of the OPRF HS Forum, with an average of about 244 views for all the other Forums. Our League is once again educating and informing our communities!

For the past three weeks, our weekly emails have included information on two different forms of tax exempt status. At the May 23 Annual Meeting, we will be voting on a Bylaw change to change our League to a tax exempt status of 501(c)(3). We currently are a 501(c)(4). Many local and state Leagues have done this already or are in the process of finalizing this change. The change to (c)(3) status will make our dues and any contributions tax deductible, stream line our State of the Villages finances, while not affecting how we advocate for our positions. Advocacy/lobbying is measured by the money budgeted and spent on it. That amount must be under 20% of our revenue to qualify us as a (c)(3). We budget less than $500 of our $24,000 budget to Advocacy at this time.
