BOOKS FOR POLITICAL JUNKIES
by Karen Wilkerson

This one is a must read…..House of Truth:  A Washington Political Salon and the Foundation of American Liberalism. This thoughtful and incredibly well-researched book by Brad Snyder gives us a flavor of the political happenings from 1912 and up through the Wilson and Roosevelt presidencies.

The House of Truth is an actual house located on Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C.  Residents included such notables as Justice O. W. Holmes, Baglam (sculpture of Mount Rushmore), Justice Brandeis, and Croly (creator of the New Republic publication). These men debated the role of the federal government, the United States involvement in foreign battles, and the rights of the growing number of immigrants.

Much of the history included in this book, will help us relate to today’s political climate where parties have diminishing impact and power groups grab opportunities to push their agendas. Fascinating.

WEARING LEAGUE BADGES AT PARTISAN POLITICAL EVENTS

As the League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization, LWVPBC members should refrain from wearing their League badges or name tags at partisan political events unless they are there in an official capacity for the LWV (ex. conducting a candidate forum, speaking as a member of the Speaker’s Bureau, distributing League literature or publications). This includes but is not limited to political party meetings, political party events, and demonstrations or marches targeting a particular candidate or politician.  League members are encouraged to be politically active and to speak and write as informed individual citizens.
SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE LEAGUE

Only the president or president’s designee speaks on behalf of the League.  Individual members may not put forth League positions in public testimony or letters-to-the-editor but may suggest that the president do so.  Members are encouraged to speak or write as informed individual citizens.
