AFFORDABLE HOUSING TRUST FUNDS
By Sammy R. Alzofon, LWV Housing Issue Group
The 2018 session of the Florida Legislature started with high hopes for additional housing funds. A bill was introduced in both the House and the Senate that would prevent the legislative sweep of Affordable Housing funds into the general budget. The Senate recommendation was for full funding, but the session closed with a very disappointing House budget appropriation.

A few facts:
  • Florida has 30 affordable and available housing units for each 100 households in need.
  • Florida has the third highest homeless population of any state in the nation
HOSPITALITY

When attending a League meeting, hospitality is a great way to meet and welcome people. Would you like to help prepare “lite bites” at Cool Topics and New Member Orientation?

We arrive a few minutes early to set up. If the meeting is in the morning, we have coffee, fruit, and something sweet. At an evening meeting, we have ice tea, fruit, cheese and crackers, and something tempting. I would love to have your help.

SPEAKERS BUREAU EXPANDING TO MEET DEMANDS

League visibility has increased in the county. Members are receiving inquiries about scheduling someone to speak on various issues. When this happens, please notify League President Karen Wilkerson or the Chair of our Speakers Bureau Ethelene Jones.

OBSERVER CORPS--FEBRUARY MONTHLY REPORTS
by Katie Gettinger and Cynthia Sheehan-Hartwell

Our February meeting started with a special time with League President Karen Wilkerson and First VP Deborah Chandler , who informed us about a state award our Observer Corps received for our reporting over the past year.
Additionally, we were encouraged to get a copy of each of our city’s charters to review. Items that are not in the charter for each area are regulated by the state, so it is important to know what is in your city charter!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
by Carol Stender
The April 1 issue is my final issue of NEWS. It has been my pleasure to serve the League over the past few years, but the time has come for me to move on--both literally and figuratively. As I no longer reside in Florida most months of the year, my tenure as Managing Editor is really untenable. If there is anyone out there with any inclination of filling the shoes which I must now leave empty, please step forward.
  • The work is challenging, positively joyful, and definitely fulfilling.
  • The individuals you will have the honor of collaborating with are most admirable and inspiring.
  • The experience will prove expansive and rewarding.
Interested individuals, please contact Ken Horkavy at kenhorkavy@gmail.com.
