It has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve as President of the LWVS for the past two years. I have enjoyed working with League members as well as the entire community in an effort to encourage active civic engagement. In what seems to be a polarized and fraught time, it has been very rewarding to work for a nonpartisan organization that promotes voter education and involvement in the larger community. I am especially grateful to our donors, supporters, and volunteers, who continue the strong legacy of the League in Scarsdale.

Message from our Incoming President:

I am deeply honored to be chosen to serve as the next President of the League of Women Voters of Scarsdale (LWVS). I first heard of the League of Women Voters (LWV) as a child in Pennsylvania when my mother would regularly attend meetings, then as the source of unbiased candidate information when I started to vote myself, and most recently as a vigilant participant in the civic life of our village and school. I have always appreciated the legion of women (and men) who have volunteered over the past century plus to protect access to and encourage participation in our democracy. And I am proud to take my turn as President of this illustrious organization.

I would like to thank our outgoing President, Heedan Chung, for her years of service. Under Heedan’s leadership, the LWVS has been a source of reliable and unbiased election information through online candidate forums, including the one to be held on June 12 for the Westchester Board of Legislators District 5 Democratic Primary, Vote411.org, and extending the Vote Now banner coverage to both Village Hall and Chase Park. In addition to our regular annual Information Sessions and Consensus Statements on the Village and School budgets and the Village and School Board Nominating Committees, over the past year LWVS has joined with other local Westchester leagues to conduct voter registration drives at regional high schools and colleges. The League has participated in Scarsdale High School’s Global Citizenship Day, mentored an A-School intern, run both Civics Jeopardy and a mock election at Scarsdale Middle School, and sent a student to Students Inside Albany. And most recently, the League hosted its annual membership meeting and luncheon featuring a Q&A with Representative George Latimer.

Over the year to come, the LWVS will continue its work to safeguard our democracy through education and advocacy. We will continue to study and analyze the local Village and School District budgets, and to pay attention to the elections for the Citizens Nominating Committee (CNC) and School Board Nominating Committee (SBNC) which form the bedrock of Scarsdale’s non-partisan system. And we will work for enhanced local transparency since the communication landscape has changed after the loss of the Scarsdale Inquirer.

I encourage everyone to engage in civic life at the local, state, and national level, to educate themselves on the issues of the day, and to make their voices heard at the ballot box and beyond. And I pledge that the League of Women Voters of Scarsdale will continue to be a faithful partner, providing a trustworthy source of information, and ensuring that our legacy of suffrage work continues well into its second century. Please become a member when our membership drive opens later this summer, join us for events and speakers, participate in our consensus process, and volunteer for local voter registration drives. You will continue to find information on all of our activities at our League website.

Remember to check your voter registration status for the June 24, 2025 Primary Election on the New York State Portal. You may register to vote on any business day of the year, but your voter registration form must be received by June 14, 2025 in order to vote in the Primary Election. 

Early voting for this election will run from Saturday, June 14 to Sunday, June 22, 2025.

Democratic Primary

Deadline to submit questions: Monday, June 2

The League of Women Voters of Scarsdale and of White Plains will be hosting a moderated online candidate forum for the Westchester County Board of Legislators, District 5, Democratic Primary.

Registration is required to attend this online forum, to be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 7:30pm -8:30pm via Zoom. The deadline for submitting an audience question is Monday, June 2. 

A LWVW-trained moderator who resides outside Westchester County will pose questions to Democratic Primary candidates Tim Foley and Jenn Puja.

LWVS Annual Meeting

On Friday May 9, 2025, LWVS hosted our Annual Meeting and Spring Luncheon at Scarsdale Golf Club. At the meeting, we successfully voted in our Proposed Annual Budget for 2025-26, our Proposed Local Program for 2025-26, and our Proposed Slate of Officers, Board Members and off-Board Nominating Committee Members for 2025-26. 

We were honored to have Representative George Latimer speak at our annual meeting. He was very open with sharing his perspective and experiences concerning local and national government during the Q & A with our members and guests, as well as with the unanticipated protesters who exercised their right to free speech. Scarsdale High School student Dylan Lemberg was selected to attend the 2025 Students Inside Albany program, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation, Inc. and the League of Women Voters of Scarsdale.

The annual Students Inside Albany program took place from May 18-21, 2025, and brought approximately 60 students from across the state to Albany to get a first-hand education about their state government. The program's main objectives are to enhance students' understanding of their role in representative government and equip them with essential tools to fulfill that responsibility.

To my First Vice President, Susan Lee, your care, and enthusiastic attention and creativity was a tremendous catalyst to our League’s reach in our middle and high schools, as well as every aspect of this year. Thank you so much for your support and guidance throughout. 

To Jenny Simon Tabak, thank you for your support and wise counsel and attention to detail and care for everything League. Your guidance as my First Vice President throughout my first year as President was invaluable, and your thoughtful insight has been a tremendous asset to our board. Thank you so much.

Lauren Grossberg, thank you for all of your youth engagement efforts and attention to detail as our Voter Service co-chair this past year. Your care and focus on excellence throughout this particularly important voting cycle was very appreciated.

Rokaya Hassaballa, thank you for your wise counsel and contributions and for all of your technology support this year.

May Cowan, thank you for all of your support and thoughtful engagement this year on the board.

And Anne Lyons, thank you for all of your wisdom and insight and all around support for the League. Thank you for serving as our fundraising chair and for planning our winter social and annual luncheon. As a 20+ year member of our board, your insight, rigor and graceful acumen regarding all things League past and present was immeasurably important to my understanding of my role as President. 

Finally, a special thanks to all of our members who attended our Annual Meeting to hear from Representative George Latimer CD-16 on the state of our government from both the local and national perspective. Thank you Diksha Mudbhary for facilitating the discussion. And thank you to George Latimer for his inspiring, illuminating, and important presentation at our Annual Meeting.
