Shake Shack opening in Metairie on Friday
Shake Shack, a burger chain that started as a hot dog cart inside New York City’s Madison Square Park in 2004, is opening its first Louisiana location in Metairie on Friday.
The opening is set for 11 a.m. at 3501 Veterans Memorial Blvd., off North Causeway Boulevard at the corner of Severn Avenue.
Shake Shack announced plans for the restaurant last October. The New York-based chain touts itself as a modern-day “roadside” burger stand with 100 percent all-natural Angus beef burgers, chicken sandwiches and griddled flat-top dogs. Frozen custard, fries, craft beer and wine are also on the menu.
The Metairie location has an outdoor patio, and the restaurant was built with recycled and sustainable materials, a news release said. It’s hiring 80 full-time and part-time workers.

Friday, July 19, 2019   2pm – 3pm
Saturday, July 20, 2019  2pm – 3pm

Join us at 2pm for a concert featuring the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park’s artist-in-residence, Herlin Riley.

Since coming of age in the nurturing environment of a very musical family and a distinguished bloodline of drummers, New Orleans native Herlin Riley emerged from that most creative era of all things rhythmic in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, to enliven the ensembles of such influential and demanding improvisers as pianist Ahmad Jamal and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis through his commanding yet elegant rhythmic presence. His authoritative style of melodic percussion is deeply imbued in the fertile creative soil of the Crescent City, encompassing as it does the entire length and breadth of America’s ongoing musical journey.

Free and open to the public, sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.

Sportsman Show in the Dome
Deer, duck and fishing expo back in NOLA.
The Louisiana Sportsman Show — the biggest hunting and fishing show in the state — is returning to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome this summer. This show will be an encore to the hugely successful show held in Gonzales this past March. This show in the Dome will be held July 19-21, 2019.
“After Katrina, we moved the show to Gonzales, and figured now is the time to return to the Dome,” said Jack Fisher, Show Director. “This show will be the perfect complement to the show in Gonzales.
On the show floor will be scores of exhibitors displaying and selling their fishing and hunting goods, many of which will be steeply discounted. Don’t miss the Puglia’s Sporting Goods mega-booth, where the retailer will be having the biggest truckload sale in their history; a literal truckload of fishing and hunting goods will be for sale at bottom-dollar prices.
Also, Chag’s Sporting Goods will be an anchor in the archery section of the show by presenting the Sportsman Archery Center, where manufacturers from Mathews, Ten Point Crossbows and ScentLok will be on hand to answer all of your questions and show you the latest in hunting goods.
Multiple seminars on freshwater and saltwater fishing and hunting will be held daily, as well as celebrity guest appearances. Stay tuned to Louisiana Sportsman magazine and LouisianaSportsmanShow.com for more information.

ABOUT KEIKO AND MATEO
The duo of Keiko and Mateo will present a musical journey through Japan, France, Jamaica and Cuba … with a hint of New Orleans’s spirit. Keiko is a pianist from Japan and has lived in New Orleans since 2006, performing with George Porter Jr., Johnny Vidacovich, Zigaboo Modeliste, Russell Batiste, and many other artists of the funk/blues/jazz fusion scene. Mateo is a tenor saxophonist and vocalist from France whorecently moved to New Orleans from Barcelona. He has performed Afro-Latin jazz, traditional Cuban and world music. Keiko and Mateo met as members of the international touring band Playing For Change and have been traveling around the world together since 2016.
ABOUT WAFAA BILAL
During the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad lost their entire library due to looters who set fire to the collection. More than 70,000 books were destroyed. Over thirteen years later, few books remain for the students to read and study. In 168:01, Iraqi-American artist Wafaa Bilal presents an austere white library that is both a monument to the staggering cultural losses endured throughout Iraq’s history, and a platform for its potential rebirth. Comprised of a series of white shelves filled with blank tomes, Bilal’s library doubles as a system of exchange that connects museum visitors directly to Iraq. Aimed at restoring the library’s lost archives, 168:01 positions viewers as potential donors whose contributions fund educational texts from a reading list compiled by faculty members at the University of Baghdad. As book donations accrue, the bookshelf becomes saturated with knowledge and filled with color as the white library is slowly replaced with books from this faculty wish list. In exchange for their contribution, donors receive the blank tomes. At the end of the exhibition, all donated books are to be shipped to the College of Fine Arts, to help begin the process of rebuilding.
Also on view are images from Bilal’s The Ashes Series, photographs of a set of miniature handmade replicas of environments destroyed during the Iraq War. Each of these three-dimensional models references a specific journalistic photograph of war-torn Iraq that was circulated in newspapers, magazines, and on the internet in the wake of conflict.

 Freedom

  • A new American play, Freedom tells the story of a Holocaust survivor and an Irish immigrant who meet hours before their American naturalization ceremony. Freedom looks at the ways we yearn for freedom—the freedom to face the truth about ourselves with grace, acceptance, and forgiveness.

Freedom   tells the story of a Holocaust survivor and an Irish immigrant who meet by chance in the hours before their American naturalization ceremony. Bearing deep wounds from the past and carrying secrets too painful to tell, they forge a connection and learn they have more similarities than differences. Based in part on survivor testimony, this new American play looks at the many ways we yearn for freedom—not just “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” but also the freedom to face the truth about ourselves with grace, acceptance, and forgiveness.

The Feel-Good Musical, Mamma Mia! Sings and Dances Into Rivertown Theaters July 19 - 21, 2019 &

NOTE: New 7:30 pm Evening Performance Time Takes Effect with Summer Show

“Perhaps the single most ecstatic musical to open on Broadway since A Chorus Line.               Mamma Mia! leaves you uplifted, enraptured and feeling like a number one
Get out your ‘70s duds and get into the musical magic of Mamma Mia! at Rivertown Theaters this July featuring two dozen hits from the ’70s pop sensation ABBA. It’s the most wonderfully entertaining summer escape that audiences have raved about since it first opened in London and then on Broadway, opening Fall of 2001.

ABBA's hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father. This sunny and funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the     identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20           years ago. The story-telling magic of ABBA's timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love,           laughter and friendship, creating an unforgettable show. “The Rat Pack is Back” Saturday, July 20, 2019 coming to Chalmette.
The Rat Pack is Back is touring the U.S. and other countries selling out theaters in many cities. Their performances at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in 2017 was fantastic. The songs, choreography, dancing, audience interaction is as close as the real thing. A tribute to Frank, Sammy and Dean. “The Rat Pack is Back” is celebrating it’s 20th year as the #1 Tribute show to the original Rat Pack is Back, selling out shows nightly in Las Vegas for 20 years. And we are proud to bring this #1 show to the Frederick J Sigur Center previously the St. Bernard Cultural Center, known for concerts and shows prior to Hurricane Katrina located in the Metro New Orleans area. A Jerusalem Shriners fundraiser.
The Dick Feeney Tribute to Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin is headlining at the Tuscany Suites & Casino in the COPA Showroom Theatre and in theatres around the country. Come and re-live the magic of the Rat Pack!
Opening the show, we are proud to announce David Born a Las Vegas Award Winning Impersonator of Robin Williams and is an exact clone to the Late Icon in look, sound and wit. He has over 25 years experience performing Tribute to Robin and has hundreds of live appearances to his credit doing so. He has toured his one of a kind Robin Williams Stand Up Comedy Tribute Show extensively across the U.S. & Canada for over a decade. David is regarded by many as one of the Best Impersonators of Robin Williams in the world. He used to have to convince audiences he wasn't the 'Real Robin'.. it is that convincing! TV & Film credits as 'Robin' include: The Price of Fame: Robin Williams on The Reelz Channel, "Community' on NBC, 'The Next Best Thing' for ABC, 'Family Feud Celebrity Look-A-Like Week', Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Last Comic Standing and Access Hollywood.

Rally for New Orleans Musicians
Sunday 7/21 at 2pm we will meet at Jackson Square and then second line to 600 Frenchman St.~

We are rallying to stand up for Eugene Grant and musicians rights in New Orleans. As gentrification continues to challenge our communities, we need to support the musicians who supply the music that is the backbone to the culture of this city. The musical traditions deserve to be preserved and protected, especially the long standing traditions of street brass bands.

Bring your instrument, water, signs, your steppin’ shoes, or anything else you feel is appropriate. We’re going to take to the streets and make some noise to show that we care about the culture and the music which fills the streets every night in New Orleans.

SAVE THE DATES: Join us for transit planning open houses
( July 22 – Thursday, July 25)
NEW ORLEANS – The Regional Planning Commission (RPC), the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and the Office of Transportation are hosting a series of 11 public meetings in Orleans Parish as part of the transit network redesign project, New Links.

“This project is part of our goal to improve general mobility for our citizens, and is critical to the future of our transit system. Access to transportation is a right, not a privilege, and everyone in our City should be able to get to work in a timely manner by bus, streetcar, ferry or paratransit,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “I look forward to kicking off these public meetings to get input from the public on how the system can be improved, and I am excited about the opportunity this project brings to our citizens.”

New Links is a year-long project to study public transit connectivity in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard parishes. The goal is to develop recommendations for a network redesign that will ultimately improve the frequency, reliability and integration of public transit across all three parishes. The RPC is leading the study, in partnership with the RTA and Jefferson Transit (JeT), with support from the City of New Orleans.

The 11 public meetings will run from
6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Figure drawing is one of the oldest and most valuable artistic traditions. In this course, you will be working with a nude model, which is an invaluable asset to aspiring and established artists alike. Drawing a model from observation develops and broadens one's perceptual drawing skills. Through this experience students will further their understanding of the proportional relationships and rhythms of the body and natural form

Food presentations and silent auctions are an integral component of our events and their success depends on the generosity received from donors like you, which allows Bridge House / Grace House to treat over 800 homeless, indigent, uninsured, and/or unemployed men and women each year regardless of one’s ability to pay. In addition to the substantial funds raised, our special events help elevate the community’s awareness of our mission

Black moon, double meteor shower and more July 2019 astronomy events

Here's a look at some of the major events,  courtesy of AccuWeather :

  • July 29 and 30: Double meteor showers! For two nights near the end of the month, skywatchers can look south to see the peak of both the Southern Delta Aquarids and the Alpha Capricornids. The two will combine for a total of about 25 meteors per hour.
  •
  • July 31: Black Moon What is a black moon? It's the opposite of a blue moon, AccuWeather explains. Instead of two full moons in a month, a black moon refers to two new moons in a month. This is good news for astronomy enthusiasts since it means plenty of good opportunities for star-gazing.

The Victory Belles

The Victory Belles are a delightful vocal trio performing the music of the 1940s, serenading audiences at The National WWII Museum and across the globe. The music of the 1940s brought hope and joy to our GIs and those on the Home Front alike—and the Victory Belles keep that tradition alive in rich, three-part harmony. Their repertoire includes all the treasured gems of the WWII era plus patriotic classics including a musical salute to each branch of the US armed forces. Performing midweek matinees in BB's Stage Door Canteen . Reserve at the ticketing link.

El Encierro : The Running of the Bulls

El Encierro : The Running of the Bulls
The Running of the Bulls at San Fermin in Nueva Orleans (#SFNO #SFNO2019) is our homage to the world famous Encierro of Pamplona, Spain, a.k.a. The Running of the Bulls. Instead of bovines, our bulls are actually RollerBulls played by skaters selected from roller derby leagues around the world including New Orleans’ all-female flat-track derby team the Big Easy Rollergirls! Join us, more than thousands of runners and hundreds RollerBulls as we bring our version of Pamplona’s Fiesta to New Orleans!
Doors open at The Sugar Mill at 6:30AM. The Running of the Bulls happens promptly at 8:00AM.
Following the encierro, registered participants will be treated to one helluva show! This year’s headliner is local favorites Morning 40 Federation! These guys are sure to bring the noise and excitement! There is lots of other entertainment on site for our  REGISTERED  guests.

La Fiesta de Pantalones

La Fiesta de Pantalones
First a brief quote from the American cinema classic Anchorman:
  • Brick Tamland: Excuse me, Veronica?
  • Veronica Corningstone: Yes? What is it, Brick?
  • Brick Tamland: I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party.”
Despite what the title may imply, there is no dress code regarding pants. But, we do encourage you to attend Pamplonese style: white shirt, white pants/shorts/skirt/dress, with red about the neck and waist. Consider that a starting point and get creative with your gear.
Our friends over at  The Rusty Nail  once again host this event, which starts immediately after the show ends at The Sugar Mill. So head over for drink specials and a continuation of the morning’s fiesta. $5 Disco Lemonades for all REGISTERED participants of #SFNO 2019, and they’ll be crankin’ the tunes with a DJ. The Rusty Nail has been a valued partner for many years. Please support those who support us!

El Pobre de Mí : Poor Me

El Pobre de Mí : Poor Me
The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.– Ernest Hemingway
If you make it through Saturday’s Running of the Bulls, you’ll likely know what this saying means. You may be broken from RollerBulls, heat and sangria, but a little food, absinthe and burlesque will help mend those broken places.
The singing of the Pobre de Mí in Pamplona marks the end of Sanfermines. This is done at midnight on 7/14. Ours is considerably different, but so is the rest of our Fiesta!
Join Nola Bulls and Roxie Le Rouge’s  Big Deal Burlesque  as we celebrate one final day of Sanfermines in the best way we know how…eating, drinking and being all around merry!!! A Hemingway theme show capped off by a Papa Hemingway Look-a-like contest.
Lula Distillery will provide the food and drinks, the the rest is up to La Madrina and Roxie!
